I love this :birdsite: thread:https://nitter.net/warren_craddock/status/1579532951624175616The point it's making is pretty good in itself. But the fact that he *still* fails to recognize that the fatal flaws of Google Glass and Google Clips included serious privacy problems is so telling! And also, ironically, another manifestation of the whole point he is making about engineering projects developing their own cultures over time.Ignoring #privacy issues is part of a *culture* in these companies.

@rysiek Just watched a guy present a talk on “web performance” at SmashingConf where he didn’t mention tracking scripts or adtech once. The elephant in the room was belting out opera while dressed in a pink tutu.

@aral @rysiek https://www.inkandswitch.com/slow-software/ here's something in the topic, "A major source of latency for users on the web is user-hostile work, such as downloading trackers that surveil user activity and loading intrusive ads." One sentence :)

Oh, and you don't even have to be a privacy activist to appreciate such problems with Google Glass (and Clips).A friend of mine had Google Glass, and he tried wearing it in public and semi-public settings a few times. A lot of times random people would recoil after learning what it is — effectively, a camera pointed at their faces with no way to tell if it's recording.Remember #Glassholes?https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/feb/19/google-glass-advice-smartglasses-glassholeYet somehow the thread does not mention that once. 🤔

@rysiek privacy is detrimental to their bottom line. they know it, we know it, they know we know, etc etc

@rysiekOf course, it also had a fatal flaw. The pictures were taken from weird vantage points. 14/nIt turns out that humans only like pictures that are taken from the perspective of other humans' eyes. It's a basic feature of our psychology, and it makes perfect sense. We don't like the vibe of pictures taken from tabletops or backpacks or lapel pins or dog collars. 15/n— https://nitter.net/warren_craddock/status/1579532968749502464#mthis reminds me of how people find Google Street View so eery, because of the angles it's shot ateverything is from the perspective of the top of a car.

@yes that's why I mentioned *recognizing* that, and *ignoring* that. I never said they are unaware. They are, they just ignore it and refuse to recognize the importance of privacy.

@rysiek they are true believers, they dont think privacy is important at all.
