@rgegriff Yeah, they've been in the motd for a while now (https://news.softpedia.com/news/canonical-under-fire-for-putting-ads-in-the-ubuntu-motd-530372.shtml)But since the latest update (yesterday, for me) which patched apt and the kernel and a few other things, it's now popping up ads periodically in apt. That's now *two* tools at least showing Ubuntu spam in them.

@Longplay_Games A good, mostly painless option for supporting games in Linux could be to use something like Conty (https://github.com/Kron4ek/Conty), by the way. That should make them easier to test in as many distros as possible.

@Longplay_Games also yeah, oof. it used to be Ubuntu LTS and CentOS were the "stable" distros for corporate purposes. if you don't want to be bothered to do maintenance you just pick one of those two and go. everyone else will figure it out from there.CentOS is effectively dead now though. I would say OpenSuse Leap but apparently they are talking about ending that (or radically changing it.) The concept of stable desktop releases seems to be DOA in the linux community now.Debian is certainly going to keep with stable releases. But note that the linux gamers are predominantly Gentoo and Arch with very recent packages.Leap seems to be going towards a heavily container based environment. SteamOS 3 is Arch but for all intents and purposes is Valve-managed docker containers. ex. you install applications with flatpak, and steam itself has proton sandboxes, so the momentum in linux is definitely away from your distro meaning much of anything and just coming in a prepackaged bundle.

@Longplay_Games a proton sandbox comes with set versions of dependencies and a wine fork which are built in designated "SDK" docker containers, so steam games are *effectively* installed and run flatpak style as well.

@Longplay_Games It's not stupid ads. It says to Ubuntu users they can have an extra support for their infra.Which is amazing : I'm testing Ubuntu Pro now and it's great. More security and time saving.Saying « ads » the way you do it is misleading. You still can use Debian, though.Btw, there is no ad for an another company than Ubuntu and there is « ads » for microk8s for ages now.🤷

@Longplay_Games it's sad to see Ubuntu becoming worse and worse because of Canonical's shitty changes. But that's what they deserve for pleasing only corporate users and stop giving a shit about their community, that made Ubuntu as popular as it is all these years.

@Longplay_Games I run just Debian and Steam is fine, I pretty much just ignore anything referring to Ubuntu specifically and it's generally not a problem. That said - last time I looked, the folks over at Mint were doing a great job of taking the Ubuntu base and stripping all the Canonical garbage out of it. It might be a good choice if you're mainly doing compatibility testing.

@fluffy @Longplay_Games It's still an asshole move from Canonical. If this was the only thing they were doing, then maybe you can say everybody is over reacting, but this comes from a long, consistent stream of bad moves from Canonical within the past few years. Everybody is tired of the corporate shitting on the Unix and GNU legacy part of Linux.

@icedquinn @Longplay_Games centos was a real bruh moment.ubuntu is basically equivalent to red hat i think. if they ever started charging to use it, i wouldnt really be surprised. nor bothered, cuz it just makes it easier to decide on debian vs ubuntu.i tried opensuse, but eh, zypper is bleh, rly slow and, it cannot uninstall dependencies like apt autoremove or like dnf always does. so i dunno who would use suse. well i like the colors..
