Democracy is at best the rule of the minority by the majority. Sound good? But wait, the majority is only 40% percent of the population, and the remaining 60% —split between conflicting interests— can eat shit. And this is in the best case scenario of direct democracy, which in reality would immediately descend into violence as the simple majority tries to force it's ways upon everyone else.In it's practical and present "representative" form however, democracy simply perfects the state, serving to manufacture consent for the rule of an oligarchy so as to launder and secure it's power.Perhaps democracy can work on the local scale, or in homogenous nations, but there are increasingly few of those. Best case realistic scenario, large now heterogenous countries can split apart peaceably according to their divisions, or at least the power of central government can be redistributed regionally.

@dave I think voting should occur when an opposition party has enough money and support to self-fund an election. If they get 50% of the population to vote, then the entire established government is dissolved, and the new party creates its own government in its place. Basically, a form of bloodless revolution. Except revolutions usually have a tightly organized minority, and this would require a broad disorganized majority.

@dave I think a one party system prob better than democracy, but I think instead of requirements like a civics quiz I'd prob only let ppl who are married with kids vote, as they have a vested interest in the future of the country. Probably make it one vote per family unit as well to stop politics from dividing men and women. Maybe combine with IQ test or something.

@dave Take the total amount you pay in taxes and subtract the amount you receive in govt entitlements. If the number is greater than or equal to zero, you get to vote. You are free to reject govt entitlements or pay more in taxes to get that number out of the negative.

The DNA tests would be impracticable to administer.However, how do we keep it this way? I strongly believe that allowing women and childless people to vote has been one of the worst mistakes that the west has made. However, history has shown that voting inevitably expands.

Make sure that all the horrendous things of today remain on the minds of people for centuries, preferably millennia, so they remember very viscerally what lies at the end of softening up voting requirements. Make sure that whenever someone even suggests going back to giving women and minorities voting rights, that there is also someone who asks them "You remember the early 21st century stuff? You remember when they forced us to send our children to public schools where they're put at the mercy of gay child molesters and tell our children to cut their dicks off, and if we take issue, they send CPS to take our children away from us? You remember they basically turned women into a loose cannon with absolute power, where everyone who wasn't a virgin could lose their career overnight because some woman they had sex with 30 years prior decided to metoo them? You seriously want to go back to those days? No you fucking don't. So no, we're not softening up the fucking voting requirements.

@ned I'm not sure why that happened. Protocol supports tagging actors without naming but Mastodon itself doesn't (AFAIK). I'm not sure what to attribute it to other than a bug. My suggestion would be to clear your caches'n'shit and let me know if it happens again.
