I've been a bit busy lately, but good is stuff happening. One of which is that I've been gaining the trust of this neglected elderly stray cat. He's finally starting to look better and allows me to pet him in between hissing. Question is what to do with him. After having him checked by the vets of our local stray cat foundation, I doubt that he will be put up for adoption considering his distrust of humans. I don't want him e-worded. Maybe get him patched up and keep him? #catsofmastodon #cats

@Gina@fosstodon.org There are programs at some cat shelters where they place cats at certain homes to socialize them. These people are usually accustomed to dealing with "difficult" cats, and they sometimes keep the cats forever if they're too difficult to place in another home at all. Generally, though, they keep the cats for several months to socialize them. You can ask your local shelter if they have people like that around, or if you're feeling adventurous, you could volunteer to be someone who socializes cats!

@Gina that would be nice! Where I lived in Vietnam we all adopted a stray cat. She was very suspicious at first but we won out. Soon she would only hiss at new people that lived in our apartment complex. Watch Cat!

@Gina a semi-stray cat can work! My parents have one that comes for food and gradually got domesticated this way. He still goes out all the time and sometimes stays who knows where for days, but then you seem him spend a rainy day just sleeping on a chair in the living room

@Gina @piggo my parents had such a semi-stray cat too, it often slept in the shed between old flower pots and left-over straw, even in winter. I think that could work for yours too as long as there's a place that is protected from wind and snow, or maybe even an old blanket? 🐱

@Gina It's tricolor, so most likely a she cat. Even just looking at the photos she looks defensive. The fur looks unhealthy, might need health care.

@Gina awww poor fellow not sure what to do but iam glad your attempting to help thats more then most would. cats are special creatures and deserve better. my own is not a "pet" but family a shelter cat named seth something akin to a son and brother but family. best of luck that fellow seems like he needs a good friend more then ever meow.

@Gina @piggo Make a box or something on the outside with some fluffy warm blankets. He can curl up in there even during winter. You can also wear the blankets a bit so he can get used to your smell.

@randynose no updates yet. I dropped him off at the stray cat foundation, they'll get him vet care, quarantine him for a while and see if he if he's fit for adoption. I've already expressed interest in adoption, so they told me to just call every Friday for updates.

Unfortunately our elderly stray had feline hiv (FIV) badly affecting his teeth and kidneys in such a way that his quality of life was severly impacted, so the stray cat foundation thought it best to give him a merciful departure. :(
