One thing I've learned from scaling up self-hosting: remote Object Storage is cheap, but remote database hosting is prohibitively expensive.I was thinking of offloading some of my server costs by migrating my massive instance DB to a managed service, but most services cost almost as much as the host itself.

We're pretty much at a point where remotely hosting gigs and gigs of video is far cheaper than remotely hosting data itself.

Depends on who's paying for the storage and bandwidth.

@sean this might explain some of the weird design decisions I've seen in some online apps, where they seemingly go out of their way to avoid having a database involved

@sean This is partly why I’ve been watching the “SQLite is a Cloud DB now” space for a few months now. DB in a file makes a lot of sense when file/object storage is so much cheaper than DB servers. Things like Litestream and LiteFS are really interesting technically. Fly.io in general seem primed to deliver wild stuff. Simon Willison’s Datasette and its many plugins and off-shoots has proven that you can do a lot with an SQLite file in the cloud.

@sean Why are databases more expensive? Do the hosts anticipate greater traffic for accesses?

@swashberry That does seem to be a factor. Apparently, it's more expensive to prop up reliable hosting for databases that require a decent amount of storage and a higher level of concurrent connections.Pricing seems to go up exponentially between packages, for services that offer this.

@sean What are you doing with the massive DB?

For the short term, I migrated to a larger Linode with a better data alottment for my database. Long-term, I’m thinking about some scheduled tasks I can run every once in a while to cut down on the bloat. Most of it comes from remote statuses that I have no need of storing.I mostly just want to keep any remote interactions that were part of one of my statuses, but get rid of any past stuff that I don’t need to keep a hold of. I can always re-fetch remote statuses as needed, but dropping records of local ones can cause some discrepancies in conversation threads.
