@zuz it's measured by the amount of hard work that an individual who strives for it, is prepared to put in, very often manual labour :)

@Monika i don't get it... how is it that hard work, particularly hard manual work, gives one or increases one's free will? And, if it's true, is it always true, or is it only true when one freely decides to do so? And, if one uses a machine, does one get less free will?

@Monika i read the italian wikipedia page about Montessori, aside her connivance with the fascist regime it seems to me that her main purpose was to find a way to make children grow into adults who choose to obey instead of being forced to it by punishment and fear-of-punishment - not into peers, not even into persons who can criticize and oppose orders.

@zuz read again and make sure you read to the end of the article:) From 1930 on, Montessori and the Italian government came into conflict over financial support and ideological issues, especially after Montessori's lectures on Peace and Education. In 1932 she and her son Mario were placed under political surveillance. In 1933, she resigned from the Opera Montessori, and in 1934 she left Italy. The Italian government ended Montessori activities in the country in 1936.

@zuz she spent WW2 in India, where she developed her method further. I am a Montessori teacher (one of my qualifications :)) and was a Montessori school owner at one stage. I also worked at several other Montessori schools. What you stated above is simply not true and not based on any evidence. Children are given freedom of choice when it comes to their daily activities and the method, when applied correctly, promotes self -discipline above all and cooperation with others.

@Monika As i wrote, i read the italian wikipedia page, https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Montessori, which at least in theory should be more thorough, and it says she had a period of connivance with the fascist regime, and that "Solamente quando il bambino sarà in grado di orientare la propria volontà a un fine, saprà obbedire ed essere quindi disciplinato [...] Bisogna domandarsi: «come può il bambino scegliere di obbedire se ancora non ha sviluppato la volontà?»" (1/2)

@Monika Seems to me like the final purpose is to have an obeying adult, just with different methods. Maybe after a period of hope, after she thought Mussolini could have been a good father for all, a "good power", she wasn't happy with what Mussolini wanted to do with this obedience. (2/2)

@Monika to me, the point is that "obedience" itself is *never* a virtue; which doesn't mean those who have power on others are always wrong, but to me nobody should have the power to order something to others, and children shouldn't be educated to obedience, but to confrontation among peers.

@zuz now that I've read it again, I get your point. Yes, obedience training, bit like dog training. But regular schools are much worse than Montessori on that front. Obedience is then carried into the work place. NOBODY is suppose to question the Boss or the MD. So that's how things stay the way they are. And school is where it begins.

@Monika According to what i cited in my previous post, which are Montessori's words, it really seems like her purpose was to make children develop obedience, like it was a virtue, by persuasion instead of (fear of) punishment. I also think the change would have to be in the adults' world at least at the same time as it was in school, if not before.

@Monika i mean something like... if one starts teaching children cooperation while the adults' world - the world of work - remains an hell of exploitation and hierarchies and so on, once those children get adult and enter the world of work they will have more difficulties than those who learned to obey the boss and to fight against their peers to try and get more money and power and so on.

@zuz oh, ok. Yeah. The kids learn to be fair and respectful of each other and then ...whaaaam, Ricky grows into a Richard and learns that he has to weasel-up to the Big Boss while at the same time, he is free to enjoy sexist jokes with his coworkers at the company's cafeteria, and laugh at the cleaner's funny shoes ...
