It's completely impractical for pretty much 90% of modern towns and cities, which are very regularly built off of or around these roads. I know a town where people don't even bother locking up their $5,000 bikes because they know they won't be stolen, and they aren't. Obviously this can't work everywhere since, well, you know there's other problems that need to be solved for that to work. Indoor bike parking would be awesome, and again, much cheaper to build/maintain than parking structures for cars. Many places already do this, actually.

It's a massive collection of a bunch of smaller issues that all happen to bleed into one, central point.People are accustomed to cars in this day and age because US infrastructure has been relatively anti-walking/biking. Pairing this with negligent drivers, and the increased public tensions making people increasingly more distrustful and uncomfortable with their fellow man, most people would prefer to travel alone, in a vehicle that offers a measure of protection from his fellow driver and fellow man.Public Transport is stuck in an even worse Catch 22 where running it is inherently going to waste by design, and in a lot of places doesn't cover the times/places that most people who would want to use it could. Trains are actually still used a lot these days, but are largely just used for freight as it's one of the most efficient ways to move large quantities of stuff quickly and safely. It would take a lot of effort to actively run transport trains again, and you can look no further then say California's Bullet Train project to see how bureaucracy, greed, and corruption can do to make large scale projects like it to see the light of day with success.To get the things you'd want out of this would require a massive upheaval of our society to lay out the groundwork needed to make it happen without impacting a lot things. It'd also require a massive effort from the government, and anyone who knows anything about the government knows that they can be slow to act and capable of making shortsighted actions to spite itself, like Biden killing the Keystone Pipeline to spite the previous administration.People on the internet get frustrated when things like this get brought up because it's frustrating for us too. It's a hard point to argue change for when it's an issue ingrained in the very fabric of our society.

As the industry became financialized the focus shifted from quality to profits, where once you had appropriately priced cars that could last for decades now you have overpriced cars that have set years of planned obsolescence. They literally design cars to only last a certain number of years so that you have to have multiple in a lifetime and the only way most people can acquired a car (which you need for most jerbs) you have to become a wage slave for usurers.
