It's quite infuriating to see people say in bad faith that Fedora is a testing ground for RHEL. Fedora were among the first ones to adopt and push next-gen technologies, like systemd, PipeWire, Wayland, btrfs, etc. way before everyone else. They help upstream developers by reporting bugs, submitting patches, etc. and later on other distros start adopting these technologies when they're ready. The truth is: Fedora is a testing ground for the Linux desktop.

@TheEvilSkeleton This is precisely they accuse Fedora as being a testing ground for RedHat! They blame systemd, Wayland, etc on RedHat. Some of them even blame the FreeDesktop.Org specs on RedHat!Because its more acceptable to villify a corporation than a community. To be clear: This is toxic, wrong, & I can't stand it!

@TheEvilSkeleton I don't love or hate Fedora. If you sit me in front of it i'll use it. Worst thing I can say about it is I don't like their website layout which is pretty subjective.

@alcinnz funnily enough, Fedora is more than happy to use a non """Red Hat technology""". For the longest time they've been using ext4, and then switched to btrfs. Meanwhile, RHEL has been using XFS (made by Red Hat) since forever and even deprecated support for btrfs.

@PublicLewdness I agree, as I don't like the website either. It's why it's being reworked.

@TheEvilSkeleton @alcinnz SGI made XFS. It was originally a filesystem for IRIX.Although, SGI were big RHEL users later on.

@TheEvilSkeleton@fosstodon.org Saying that is not true and true at the same time. This is coming from someone who has used Fedora since fc2. It is my goto distro. There is no denying that it is funded, in part by RH. How much of that money determines the direction the OS takes, no clue. They are unavoidably linked.

@lucifer no one denied they are linked, and I certainly agree that Red Hat has some influence over the project. My point is that users blindly call Fedora a testing ground for RHEL, without noticing that many technologies these users use were first adopted and pushed by these Fedora, followed by the huge amount of contributions to upstream. And believe me, I influenced some of the project's decisions in very little time - I spent a whopping 0$.

@byterhymer @alcinnz interesting and thanks for telling me. Wikipedia claims that the developers are SGI and Red Hat. Any thoughts on that?

@TheEvilSkeleton @alcinnz this is probably more informative?https://lwn.net/Articles/638546/SGI/IRIX XFS was circa 1994.XFS version 1.0 for Linux was 2001.I was working on SGIs before 1994, but unpaid and uncited at nps.navy.mil as a uhhh "plausible deniability" teenage exploited minor, back then I was particularly interested microcode and digging MIPS immensely.SGI did finally (decades too late) make me a job offer circa 2016, but retracted it. ;( HP bought them not much later.
