what would it truly take to have data portability for people? i think the current paradigm of storing things in massive tables and monolithic databases for the whole instance is not really ideal. imagine if you had a standardized schema and you could easily export/import just a single user's data by simply dumping a single table or database. or imagine a flat-file system where static JSON was served out of your outbox. both of those could be better than current behavior.

also, dns is a major issue because all our identifiers are based on it. maybe a URN resolver or lookup service could help...

@trwnh the death of instances, user to user networks only carry the data you want to keep

@trwnh honestly, i don't think data portability on fedi (i assume you're talking about fedi) is really a concern. i don't think of my past posts and something i need to take with me, for the most fedi posts are things you make and let them fade into the past. if you want something to stay up permanently you should post it on a personal website or something.taking follows and followers (and blocks and mutes) is a real concern, but i can already export and import them those as CSV (im on Pleroma, dunno if this is supported on other fedi software).another concern is the ability to have followers automatically re-follow your new account if you have to move to a new instance, which is harder to provide because it's on the other side of things. i think mastodon already supports that, though badly implemented as a secure implementation of it would require cryptographic identities, which would be a fundamental design change to fedi

@cope you need something like shared hosting for people who dont know how to host. even in the indieweb movement there's room for neocities or tumblr

and so public access infrastructure remains hegemonic, forced to optimize for owning everything it can and no less

@Yujiri some people are okay with losing their data, others see fedi as "a personal website" and want to take their data with them. i think fedi could stand to benefit from being more like a website. but heck, even email lets you move messages with IMAP...

@trwnh disagree. software should focus on a single purpose, not try to do something.

@trwnh #MUMPS allowed something similar with its hierarchical structure. The root node could be something like ^USERS("trwnh", "posts", 2022, 10, :toot_id). Just export everything under the user's root node instead of ensuring all the joins are accounted for.

@trwnh have you checked out how its done in #hubzilla / #zap / #streams ?Get nomadic identity. Can run multiple clones on different servers to guard against censorship & downtime

@Yujiri what exactly are you disagreeing with? i don't understand what you mean by "single purpose" here as it relates to data portability.

@trwnh I’m disagreeing that fedi could stand to benefit from being more like a website.
