i think the very idea of "phone number" is going to be obsolete very soon.most young people nowadays are not using the phone network to communicate. why the hell would they care about phone numbers?

@thor well, I think, not before everyone has a place in federated messengers and social medias. For now, classical phonecall is the only free and independent communication type, every phone owner uses for sure. And the only proof of identity, that is well known

@jakob_thoboell on what planet is a system that relies on privileged carriers and ridiculous "you pay per minute" "free"?

@thor Free in the meaning of not forced to have an account at the same company and server, like whatsapp, Signal and so on. Since these are not interoperable, the classic phonecall is the only possibility to connect you without worrying about which provider the opposit is using. I think we won't get rid of the priority of phone numbers for ID and communication, until free and federated messengers dominate over WA, TG and so on.

@thor Many services that communicate over packet switched networks use the phone number as a primary identifier (especially services that fill the same niche for users as SMS with extra features). I expect the notion of having a phone number will last longer than you expect.

@thor Maybe the young people without jobs. Those with a job have on-call or other business related things that might require a phone as, a message on a messenger doesn't wake you up at 1 A.M., a phone call does.

*Yes.*I'd much rather use a protocol with a variety of different providers than a totally centralised service.

@skypage eh, if the phone number has been reduced to only being an ID method...it's not serving the original purpose...

That's what i said/meant.Skype/Discord/Teams are the centralised services. The phone network is the one with multiple providers.

You don’t fundamentally have more of any of those things with a decentralized service. What you really want is encryption, anonymity, ephemerality, and transparent code. You can only have half of those in decentralized systems.

@thor I'm sure it's far from the only example of something finding common usage that's orthogonal to its original intended use. Can't say that bothers me, personally, with how much I've improvised using things outside of their intended purpose 😆

I count 3/4. Full ephemerality is impossible with computers but encryption limits the number of people who can archive info.Have you heard of Cwtch? it aims for all three. You are probably right though that it’s possible to get a large portion of total freedom and privacy using cryptography. @thor Old-style Street Addresses aren't very hot either, but they're still in use for some reason.
