@alex In all seriousness, it's a hard question to answer, we're not referring to any tangible object/service or even any specific software, but protocols that computers use to interact with each other."The web" is a way in which this goal was accomplished before, perhaps shortening it to "The Fedi," (or perhaps just "fedi") even in more formal writing would work better than "The Fediverse."In terms of a new idea, a generic English word that might work as a name would be "Junction," which I think represents the idea of interconnection fairly well.

@Wormwood @alex ThisIt also makes a lot more sense because the confederverse is not controlled by any central authority but rather confederal in nature. Also fed-i-verse never made sense because it's not fed-i-rated but rather fed-e-rated.
