An ex friend of mine, while making a GrapheneOS build server, disabled those mitigations as it slows shit the fuck down.Although, I feel that anything that connects to the internet often and runs a lot of software needs to have these mitigations enabled.

I had an resolution issue with dual displays (that I'm convinced is xinerama's FreeBSD implementation), because it sucked just as bad in i3 and mate. Monitor was flaky anyway, so back down to 1 screen, and stock dwm, productive back up, anxiety slightly lower (who'm I kidding, anxiety... @Coyote @SoyMagnus @itzzenxx Wayland prevents keylogging from any program other than the focused window, has high security across the board, and requires that programs are granted explicit permission to access mouse and keyboard etc.X grants every running program permission to view window contents of every other running program, keylog every key you press in every other window (including sudo/doas root password when your web browser is open; you see where this is going?), and even move and control every other window. If you care about your security and/or privacy at all, do not use X. X is okay for gaming systems which may not fully support Wayland and don't require high security, but never, ever, use X on a secure and private system.

@Coyote @dovelrei @SoyMagnus @itzzenxx Unfortunately, OpenBSD isn't as secure as people make it seem. Having "only 2 remote holes in the default install in a heck of a long time" means nothing in security terms. It lacks CFI, it lacks Wayland support, it lacks a lot of modern security systems and features.OpenBSD is secure with the code it *does* have; the issue is the code is doesn't have, which is, frankly, most of it...The BSDs suck at security. If you must use a BSD, use HardenedBSD.Linux is the best Unix for security, as it implements Wayland support, a vast array of security kernel options, and is now even implementing CFI (been available for ARM64 for years, now coming to x86-64). It also has proper MAC solutions such as SELinux.

@itzzenxx @dovelrei @SoyMagnus @Coyote Yeah, from what I understand, PS4 and PS5 use Clang to compile their kernels and OS etc, so it's likely that PS5 does use CFI.

@inference @dovelrei @SoyMagnus @itzzenxx Security is as much of an illusion as privacy, they are one in the same, they do not exist in absolutes, only "levels of inconvenience in the way." Obscurity still matters sometimes. But might look into that, I really do think I might go with a hypervisor on bar metal though, and just mess with everything.. I wanna swich OSs the way I switch workspaces... Unfortunately, I still kinda need to... All the shit I used isn't all on one OS.

@Coyote @dovelrei @SoyMagnus @itzzenxx Of course there is no such thing as 100% privacy. My point is X is a huge liability to your security and privacy because of how it allows EVERY program to spy on and keylog and even control EVERY other program. That's more than just a little hole...

@Coyote @SoyMagnus @dovelrei @itzzenxx 100% privacy and security doesn't exist, but that doesn't mean you should just let it happen.

@Coyote @SoyMagnus @dovelrei @itzzenxx FreeBSD doesn't have CFI, so it must be a Sony thing if it does. TFW a gaming console is more secure than a "secure" OS...

@lamp @dovelrei @SoyMagnus @itzzenxx @Coyote Control-flow Integrity. It produces a control-flow graph (CFG) during compile-time, to enforce the stack to point to functions intended in the source code (forward-edge CFI), and returns from functions back to the stack (backward-edge CFI). It ensures that the program is terminated rather than allow an attacker to modify the stack of the software to hijack functions to do whatever they want.

@lamp @Coyote @SoyMagnus @dovelrei @itzzenxx Fun fact: Chromium uses forward-edge CFI, while Firefox does not. Therefore, Chromium is based, while Firefox is not.

@Coyote @dovelrei @SoyMagnus @lamp @itzzenxx One sec, let me raise my shields and hide in my fortress...*Raises shields and hides in fortress.*The *only* browser I recommend to anyone is Chromium-based, never anything else, especially Firefox or NetSurf etc if you want security or privacy. The only fallback I'd personally use is Safari, but never first choice.

@inference @SoyMagnus @itzzenxx @Coyote I’m not buying it.A proper security model would mean properly sandboxing applications (which you can do in X11), rather than expecting the protocol to do it for you and limit what you can do overall as a result. Also, Wayland is nightmare for accessibility.

@wada @SoyMagnus @itzzenxx @Coyote The protocol should do it by default; the user shouldn't have to take steps to harden it further.X can be nested, at a great cost to setup and configuration, but this doesn't change the enormous, bloated codebase of X and its XCSECURITY failure.Wayland is close to Android GUI isolation out of the box, and Android has an incredibly good display manager.

@inference @SoyMagnus @itzzenxx @Coyote The protocol shouldn't have to require you to come up with an entire security module system in order to make accessibility functional.

@SoyMagnus @itzzenxx @inference @Coyote I’m actually mostly indifferent towards Wayland or X11 (aside from issues with accessibility), but I get especially bothered when people say things like ‘don’t use __ on a secure or private system’ because %99 of the time they are used on a secure/private system, just that their insecurity is mitigated by a whole confluence of factors (isolation, sandboxing, OPSEC, ‘burnability’, etc.).If you want to take security more seriously, just learn to be more secure???
