@matt imo, paying someone else to host your account defeats the purpose of decentralization. We need to move past the idea that an oligopoly is markedly better than a monopoly and build toward radical decentralization (i.e., build solutions that can be hosted by anyone).

@matt Perhaps so. I've seen the issue from both sides, as a pod operator hosting other folks' accounts early in the Diaspora days and later as a user on other folks' systems. The power dynamics that evolve from partial decentralization are, again imo, more toxic than those associated with consuming externally controlled services by the massive players in the space (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, etc.) I'd take Twitter over a cyber-HOA.

@matt I'm already donating 1€ per week, so in total I would already exceed the max of your poll. But my logic is to partly cover the cost of the instance, and partly donate to the cause (i.e Fediverse).

@justin @matt Covering the costs you're actually causing has nothing to do with creating an oligopoly, that's utter nonsense. Particularly when there're thousands of alternatives. Anyway, you can go over https://masto.host/ to create your own instance for 6€/mo if that's your goal?
