I have a collections so it varies, but I tend to gravitate towards divers, that lets you spin it in the quickest. The outer bezel is marked up to an hour, and it’s tactile so you aren’t screwing around with buttons. Most divers follow the rolex pattern on the left, it’s not my fave because it lacks fine detail. I like their Milsub pattern more on the right because it’s more granular, has indications for every minute. Pretty much all of them only spin one way, a lockout function from their use as oxygen timers underwater. You’d rather underestimate your supply than overestimate it, so they go counterclockwise. For a fun daily user I’d probably get a sub as an entry point, provides good utility, they’re fairly hardy, and they go with a lot of diff. styles. Seiko used to be a good entry but they’re a little overpriced these days IMO, they’re still pretty good but have gotten sloppier as they make more of their stuff outside of japan. Their movement, the NH35, is quite excellent and is basically a crate engine for the industry today. When I first got into them I gravitated towards the pricier stuff but today I’ve sold them all, tired of the maintenance and headaches. Right now my Omega has moisture in the case so I’m looking at a stiff repair bill….To start out I don’t think there’s anything wrong with getting a diver with an NH35 for $130 just to get a taste for it, then go from there. hundreds of no-name chinese brands, more than a few give you a sterile dial without any branding which is even cooler. Some dislike how many of them are ripoffs, but even the big boys are just grabbing style elements off each other all the time so I don’t stress over it. If you want it to be “pure” then there is a thriving niche of more individually stylized stuff with the same movements in the $250 rangeRT: https://poa.st/objects/d880c2fd-5df9-490a-87d9-0cbb5347cdfb

@WashedOutGundamPilot That won’t beep at you though. How do you notice when the times up? Do just check it all the time?Setting timers on a digital watch is such a finnicky annoying process. Spinning the bezel must be a lot nicer for sure

@white_male Maybe but they’re getting stuck up now, and a bunch of their stuff is more fashion oriented so their styling is getting more stuck in the moment. A good ol’ SKX was great for it’s time but they’re like, $400 on the market now, it’s insane. If I were gonna go for one of those I’d probably go for the Citizen NY004, mechanical, instead. I think it’s under appreciated in comparison to the rest of the field, and it was even issued as a mil. diver for a time. I think the italians issued them and just had them marked for 500m, didn’t even change them at all. The only downside is the bezel isn’t aggressive enough for gloved use IMO

@WashedOutGundamPilot Man, that's too much deliberation on accessories for me. I just want ~150$ wrist watch that'll survive swimming pool, sauna and won't scratch easily. Seiko 5 did it for me once and never revised my choices for over 20 years.

@white_male Understandable. They did a shakeup of the line about 2 years ago. You know, they had to "update". Millennials really fell in love with them and I think they're capitalizing on that interest by trying to inch their stuff upmarket. This is what greets you on their website now, it's all nigger-inspired "STREETWEAR" now, moved away from the modest japanese quality they used to offer. Lots of $1,200 reissues of affordable watches now, too. Not to mention they aren't even japanese, the old system where you'd look at the dial and see "Made in Japan" are mostly gone unless you drop REAL money. I'm cooled on them. I recommend the no-names because you get a feel for what you like before you drop $300 on something that sits in your closet unworn. Plus I see collectors wising up to the *old* no-name brands. They now drop a grand or two on a sears-brand watch that purists would have stuck their nose up at today. I wouldn't be surprised if 50 years from now someone's like "Oh yeah, 'DeepBlue' was a kind of modified seiko seller, great quality for the price back then".

@white_male MSRP on their site. Not sure how much of a discount on street, feels like $250 is the going rate for a usual SKX. Als I freakin’ hate their gay superman S. The japs can’t figure out a cool logo for the life of them. Just use kanji and you’d move 10,000 of these a day, people would love it.

@WashedOutGundamPilot Hey man, I appreciate your passion on the subject. All I really wanted is to give the other guy an alternative attitude towards the subject.Me personally, I'm out of watch market until current Seiko 5 dies, might be another 5 years. I'll probably have to put it in harm's way or just lose it.

@white_male Had a lot of time stuck in hotels rooms to shop them. If you have kids I’d recommend grabbing enough for each of them, it’s a fun milestone to inherit and it’s something that you can keep going for multiple generations. If I were going heirloom then I’d move upmarket a bit, though there isn’t any shame in a well-built cheapie either. The guts are pretty much the same these days anyways. No shortage of $500 watches with the same chinese NH35 movement as my $100 beater

@Agartha_Noble @white_male I can’t imagine trying to explain all the effort, having to hand disassemble a VENUS movement all so I can put a homemade Sneedmaster insignia on, etc. to a 63 year old at work. “Ah, well, you see, there’s this really funny pasta….okay, first, the simpsons. No? Okay, well, there’s this…..”

@WashedOutGundamPilot I have always like sports watches and dive watches for the heritage and durability/practicality. I don't really like dress watches that much. Or anything gaudy with gold or gay colors.

@Riamu If you’re gonna get one, that’s how you do it. Get the SKX007 from someone who sees it as a regular seiko and you’re good to go. What sucks is that it got to be so legendary the older ones that people have are being sold like they’re collectibles. If you bought one 10 years ago for $120 you’ll see that exact same piece being sold for $400 today for no other reason than “yeah but they don’t make ‘em anymore!!!” THey have, thankfully, finally updated the movement though, they’re now hand-windable….but no more screw-down crown. Getting the older one will be seen as getting the high point of seiko value. I kinda doubt these new ones will be seen as fondly as the ol standby

@WashedOutGundamPilot The one I got is the SBDC063 with the metal bracelet. I resent all the faggot resellers and jewish stores that make a lot of these older sport watches as something that costs 80 billion when they really all should be less then 5k. It is good that the companies have sold the same models for the past 60 years otherwise they'd be even more expensive.

@Riamu Buddy that’s not so much a seiko as a prospex. That’s a much better deal to get in terms of fit and finish. Before you handle a lot of the range it would seem like it’s just a higher priced version of their basic series but they age better, hold up under wear more than the naked steel of the cheaper ones, etc. That’s probably the shopping ground I ought to hunt for, every time I see them today they’re like $1400 for something i like.

@WashedOutGundamPilot It is a prospex, my buddy mentioned that it had a lot of features like better polishing and a bunch of features from seikos much higher end watches. I guess looking back I got a really good deal for it then. He gave me the white man discount, common hatred of jews I suppose.

@Riamu Yeah, the matte coating on the body is better, and they usually go through more effort in uniformly applying it. The affordable stuff skimps out on the machining processes sometimes, so the case shape is more optimized for produciton in some models, and you don’t get it polished underneath the springbars. Not to mention the bezels generally hold up much better over time. I didn’t think there was much difference but after seeing a few with a lot more age on them I think they diverge with time. Prospex stuff looks newer, longer when subjected to hard use. Most people don’t beat on their watches so the difference isn’t always apparent though

@WashedOutGundamPilot I got it used there are some minor scratches on the links but the case has none and crystal doesn't either. For my first big boy watch I didn't want something I wasn't going to be comfortable wearing actively and not baby it.
