#ProTip If you fear a domain may get terminated, use #dig with the tool below and collect the #DNS records of your domain and subdomains. You can use them in /etc/hosts on #Linux and you will be able to continue accessing the server, even if the domain goes down. This is what we should've done with #DistroTest, but it's too late!https://toolbox.googleapps.com/apps/dig/

@distrotube made a video about #YouTube burnout, where channels that have been doing YouTube for a long time need to take breaks to come up with interesting content.DT, if you ever get to that point, this is the time you should start maintaining all the other projects you have going, such as https://distro.tube, Gemini, and even your Mastodon profile. Also, how are you finally going to give us #DistroToot?https://yewtu.be/watch?v=JbfKFRhn7uM

@freeschool Actually it's not from the pinball game, but I'm pretty sure, the game used that voice synth sample too. It's a track by Rob Sonic, I've attached the full version. The "space cadet" sample is from another old game, Gorf: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adN1P_8ScksHence the name of the track. It's somewhat novel to me to hear that synth loop continuously the way you did it, because in the original track it ends abruptly and the voice synth sample comes in 😁@james

@freeschool I prefer direct links to YouTube and not privacy-respecting frontends because the ones using them usually have some sort of browser extension that redirects them to the instance of their choice, and direct link will still work even if particular frontend instance is down. The ones who use youtube-dl/yt-dlp/mpv to watch YouTube can just copy and paste direct link.Invidious is of course good, but direct links are still preferrable IMO 🤷@james

#Google #Chrome is planning to drop #ManifestV2 in favor of #ManifestV3. This will make it harder to develop #adblock extensions such as #uBlockOrigin, unless you switch to #Firefox. But Google did a trick. Their replacement still allows you to make Adblock extensions, but they won't work as well, subconsciously leading users to believe that they just don't work, and they get uninstalled. No thinking about trying an alternative like Firefox. This is part of the plan to track everyone and put ads in front of their face, with no way to disable it. You will see the ads and you will like them.Be thankful #Mozilla still exists and is keeping Firefox alive. Without them everyone will be using a Chromium-based browser, or Safari (but that's exclusive to Macs and iPhones, sorry).https://yewtu.be/watch?v=uh5Bhw-wyZchttps://machines.social/@trevorflowers/109070912518296797

Be thankful you're not on mobile, where mobile browsers don't even support extensions, except for #Firefox, which will still keep Manifest v2 and be able to block ads on Android. On iOS, you don't get any adblockers.

I like to leave a poll open for many days just to see the results, but I probably should've kept it at just 1 day. The highest-voted option was linuxrocks.online. I requested an invite from @nafnlj, and got it.Poll's over! Follow my new 8th fediverse account: @jamesp@linuxrocks.onlineAlso follow my PeerTube account which I've had since 2021-11-10: @jamesp@peertube.linuxrocks.onlineI might still set up an 8.1st account...

Starting next month (October 2022), I will be switching to a new format for archiving posts to better account for having multiple fediverse accounts, as well as instances such as Soapbox and Akkoma that don't show threads unless you to to the "With Replies" section, which not everyone wants to do.I will have a webpage containing links to some of the best posts I have made on Mastodon, categorized by Month of Year. Junk posts and those I don't feel like keeping won't go, but those I like and were successful will stay, such as my post about Microsoft below.https://mstdn.starnix.network/@james/108584214322099100More details to come in the future. Please follow my new account @jamesp.

Okay, I’ll cut myself some slack. October happens to start on a Saturday, so Monday will be October 3. That means that I’ve extended the September thread to end on 2022-10-02, and the October thread, starting 10-03, will be on my website. There’s always Tuesday, 10-04 if I’m late. Gave myself some grace time.

@dem32 Because I actually make really good posts, but I need to reference them easily, which is hard when I boost a lot of Linux/FOSS-related posts on my profile. I don't like to post a lot of ****posts unless it's usually related to Linux/FOSS and seems appropriate and helps people learn. I also like to post news.I have alt accounts if I want to post any ****posts, though I don't really like to do it anyway. That word also contains a swear word, so I star it out.

Thanks to people's protests (and because developers weren't ready yet), #Google #Chrome is delaying the deprecation of #ManifestV2 as part of their transition to #ManifestV3. Slow down--don't call this a win, but at least we now have extra time to prepare. Before, the cutoff for regular users was January 2023. That has been delayed to June 2023, when all Manifest v2 extensions will be changed from Public to Unlisted in the Chrome Web Store. The enterprise cutoff used to be June 2023. That is now January 2024, when all Manifest v2 extensions will be removed from the Chrome Web Store.Google will be running experiments in Chrome 112 in the Canary, Dev and Beta channels on disabling Manifest v2 in January 2023, and in Chrome 115 in all channels, including Stable, in June 2023. Expect then that your Manifest v2 extensions like uBlock Origin will stop working, and Enterprise users will have until January 2024 to run those extensions, when Google will finally kill Manifest v2, remove all the remaining extensions from the store, and remove any references to Manifest v2 in the Chromium source code. You can learn more by reading the article below:https://www.ghacks.net/2022/09/29/google-delays-the-death-of-manifest-v2-extensions-to-2024/You may also read Google's official release about the delay of Manifest v2's deprecation:https://developer.chrome.com/blog/more-mv2-transition/

While I'm also there, Windows 8.1 will be ending support on January 10, 2023. Even though I don't use Windows on my personal computers anymore (I still use Windows on other computers, even though I use Linux on my main computer), I would like to download the 32-bit and 64-bit ISO files so I can play with it and Windows 10...in virtual machines. :windows:

Well, I ran out of time again. I'm already well into October, and I got used to threading like this anyway. I guess I'm forced to move on. Hopefully I won't have to make a thread like this for much longer. Good thing there's not much on my alt accounts yet anyway.New thread for October 2022: https://mstdn.starnix.network/@james/109112647030628475

@james @tomcat and if a pihole isn’t your thing look at NextDNS. Sort of a cloud based pihole. Worth every penny.

@tomcat @james its works decently well for most simple types of adsbut a lot of sites are starting to embed more devious ways of ad placement. For instance, youtube ads cant be blocked by piholebut thankfully we have amazing projects like invidious that bypass the yt bloat alltogether

@theorytoe @tomcat No wonder I still saw YouTube ads on uBlock Origin Lite, which by default only blocked by a network filter (hostfiles do this too), so you would have to resort to cosmetic filter to block the ads. Also, privacy frontends will keep working as long as YouTube doesn’t switch to DRM.
