I just learned something amazing. English use to have lots of extra letters. Including this beauty, þ or thorn. þ makes the sound 'th'. Cool, but that's not what blew my mind. During the late middle ages the fashion was to write þ but not to close the loop making it look like a y. So much so that when printing came to England, they just used y instead of making new type. This means that "the" was printed as ye. That's right, the word that starts all those fake olde English signs is just "the".

There never was a word "ye". We made it up because we don't know how to read.
