An example of typing with 10 fingers, 2 index fingers and 2 thumbs while holding the device. I’m currently working on a review and a documentation regarding the PPKB that will be linked here soon.

@techsaviours@fosstodon.org That’s actually very easy thanks to my mirrored layouts at https://codeberg.org/phalio/ppkb-layouts#user-content-mirrored that add another shift, Fn, ctrl and alt for the right thumb. You can even see me typing a ! with right shift at 1:01 in this video. It’s great!

@leadore@toot.cafe It gets easier over time as one gets used to it but to be honest I still mistype a lot, especially with 10 fingers, it took quite a few attempts to get perfect recordings of me typing these sentences. And of course multiple mistake-free recordings were ruined by everything going wrong that could possibly go wrong: The phone screen’s brightness turned out to be too low in the recording, the camera’s battery ran out, the camera’s SD card became full, I accidentally moved the phone partly out of the camera’s view during handheld typing, a reflection of my face was visible on the phone’s screen, and possibly other things I’ve forgotten (see the jumps of the time displayed on the phone screen in the three scenes). But at least that got me some extra typing practice, and I was listening to the LoTR soundtrack and using my beloved Emacs, so it was time well spent.

@phalio Haha, I did notice the lack of typos! Well, the video came out great in the end.How well does emacs editing work on that keyboard? Do you use regular vanilla key chords or do you go evil/modal? I use the standard method and wonder if it would be difficult to do the chords without smashing too many keys. On the bright side, there would be no problem reaching the Ctrl key!

@LinuxLounge One of them is, but I already partly regret what I’ve written there and it only focuses on two recent things and like half of it is just about online usernames https://phal.io/poots/2022-08-13_stardew_names.html. I plan to write about the entire thing at some point. I’ve also more or less publicly written these https://nitter.net/Phalio_/status/1547992563826585602 after finding these https://nitter.net/paxiti/status/1018872960751415296 which was my tipping point and when I told my best friend.Do you have anything public about your story? Reading and watching videos about other people’s experiences made me understand and accept myself and others better, and whenever I doubt if it’s really okay to be the way I am I think of the wonderful people I know of online who are confident and happy being trans and/or non-binary (one of them being a very nice former Minecraft YouTuber I used to watch as a young teen who recently came out), and that really helps.

@leadore@toot.cafe I use the default style, I personally never liked modal editing, I changed that in my Qutebrowser too.It works really well on the PPKB. In “laptop/lap mode” when all fingers can be used to type, key chords work just as well as they do on big keyboards for me. My fingers seem to have a good size for the tiny keys, but something like C-x C-c with the index and middle fingers next to each other on x and c could be an issue for people with bigger fingers and potentially take a little longer. It doesn’t work very comfortably by default in “handheld mode” with only thumbs since the left thumb with access to the left half of the keyboard can’t press multiple keys at once (unless they are right next to each other, M-x is a perfect candidate for that, as well as anything requiring Ctrl+Shift and the like). But I had the idea to solve that with custom keyboard layouts that add right versions of modifier keys for the right thumb https://codeberg.org/phalio/ppkb-layouts#user-content-mirrored. That’s of course a little slower compared to using more fingers just like handheld thumb-only typing in general, but it makes Emacs, terminals and general keyboard usage work fully and comfortably in handheld mode. I can just hold right Control with my right thumb and then type x c or anything with my left thumb. That of course also includes typing capital letters on the left half and other stuff. It’s great! Emacs on the go! I wonder how many other people check off their grocery list on their phone with C-c C-c in Emacs :blobcatthinkingsmirk:

@phalio Wow, nice job on those keyboard layouts. Having the modifiers on both sides would be good for me even in laptop mode since I'm used to using the opposite side from the key for the modifiers. Nice to know that's possible, along with full ability for thumb typing too!Makes me want to get one of these. I still use a dumbphone because I didn't want a smartphone until I could get a really good Linux one (I do use a small tablet though) I haven't kept up to see if pinephone is there yet.

@leadore@toot.cafe I guess that depends on what you need it to do, you could give me some more details or ask in the Matrix channel. I wouldn’t call the regular PinePhone a “really good smartphone”, both because the hardware is quite slow and because software for Linux phones still has a long way to go. With a few exceptions I can’t really comment on the state of “regular” Linux phone applications that are built for touchscreens and portrait orientation (although I hear that that’s already going quite well) because as you can see I use it basically like a normal computer with Sway, which is mostly made possible thanks to the keyboard and works very well. I use the terminal a lot which is perfect because it’s very fast no matter the slow hardware and I don’t have to worry about phone/distro/architecture compatibility. Hardware accelerated video playback works perfectly up to 720p30, although supposedly it should be capable of a lot more when not slowed down by display scaling and rotation. I also very rarely use regular phone calls and SMS but I had some issues in that area, as quite a few people have. But that was when I was still using the outdated first version of the proprietary modem firmware that the phone came with, I’ve since upgraded to the improved FOSS firmware and not made a call with it yet but receiving SMS and using mobile data seems to have been working without issues.I personally mostly use it for listening to music with cmus (mostly with Bluetooth earbuds), Emacsing in Emacs, watching local and online videos with mpv, reading ebooks with epy and browsing the web with Lynx, qutebrowser and Firefox, which all works very well.If everything you want to use it for already works good enough for you and you don’t mind waiting 12 seconds for a graphical web browser to start and heavier websites being laggy and occasionally troubleshooting something, the PinePhone can already be a really good “phone”. Otherwise, if that’s still within your price range, you could wait for the PinePhone Pro to be ready which is a lot faster and sounds more like it will eventually be a really good phone, and that would also leave some more time for the mobile Linux ecosystem as a whole to continue improving and “get there”.

@msu The minimum is unfortunately only 2 keys at once. The one measure taken against ghosting is a sixth row being used in the electrical grid for a few modifier keys. The usual issue of any three keys activating a fourth if they form a rectangle is very prevalent but of course depends on your use. You can take a look at the attached image which shows the key positions in the electrical matrix based on https://xff.cz/git/pinephone-keyboard/tree/keymaps/physical-map.txt. Then see if any key combinations you are likely to use would result in the rectangle issue. As you can see, shift, ctrl and Fn OR alt do not share rows or columns, so key combinations with them work perfectly fine. In my regular usage I constantly notice the issue in my Pine/Meta/Win key combinations as I have set up at least one with every key and using shift+Pine with any key from the A-; or Z-/ rows results in a ghost key press from the other row. I work around this by using shift+Pine combinations only for either the upper or the lower key so that the

@msu ghost key (usually) doesn’t do anything. The other instance is pressing ctrl+Fn+alt+2 or 3 to switch to TTY 2 or 3. Fn+alt and 2 or 3 form a rectangle, so it always switches to TTY 3, but that too can be worked around by just not using TTY 2 or by using `chvt 2`. Besides that, at least 5 keys that don’t form rectangles can be pressed before the signals start getting buggy.
