@Mirk0dex I learned about Linux in a university course, when we had to learn bash.I later learned about GNU and the free software movement when I got curious why there was a "Linux vs GNU/Linux" debate.

@Mirk0dex well orginally when I was 8 I got into it as I was just booting chromium os on a school computer lol. But I tried Ubuntu and said fuck no basically. Then that computer uh it didn't boot for a while. So a year later I got a laptop. Then so and so on some ordinary gamers had me consider it, but it wasnt pushed. Soo later after that I found mental outlaw, and he got me into archlinux.

@Mirk0dex Got recommended Pop_OS by a friend in 2019, and by that point, I installed Ubuntu on my main machine.Over the pandemic, I ran into issues and would find solutions to them, learning more about Linux.And sometime around late 2020, I became deeply immersed in the philosophy of free software, and of how proprietary software sucks assAnd now here we are! if that friend did not recommend Linux to me, I would probably not be here writing about it.

@Mirk0dex my first 'real' distro I used was manjaro, just to intermediate between archlinux, then I manually installed archlinux on my main machine, which btw the installation guide is meh

@Mirk0dex actually let me add a bit more:I basically vowed when windows 11 was first announced to fully switch to Linux, and it was a good time to do so.

@Mirk0dex I loved game development and hated Unity's policies. I started looking for a game engine that doesn't limit its own usage & have any elaborate legalities. I came across Godot in a video demonstrating game engines. Fast forward a few months, I was very active in the Discord server of Godot. Fast forward to this day I don't use Discord. I don't talk to 90% of the people I've met there except for those whom made the switch to XMPP/Matrix. I do little to no game development. I use little to no proprietary software and I hate almost the entire software development industry, especially the game development industry. :p I guess it is still better than the music industry though.TL;DR: Met free software philosophy through Godot Discord community, and started to almost exclusively use free software from there onward.

@Mirk0dex I've been using Linux since I was 9, when I got my first Raspberry Pi. A few years later, I installed Pop! OS on "real" hardware, then dropped Linux for a while, then I installed Manjaro which got me back into free software.Nowadays I run trans arch linux (literally manjaro converted to base arch)

back in sept 1991, I volunteered as Unix sysadmin at the uni, and profs would often ask me to install GNU software for them. as I learned about it, I installed a lot more GNU software on various Unix flavors, to the point that I ran GNU on several different architectures and Unix libc/kernel combinations. I didn't pay much attention to the colleagues walking around with huge piles of floppy disks until I "inherited" administration of a research lab that had several PCs running GNU/Linux, some 5 years later

@Mirk0dex It wasn't the first GNU/Linux distro I installed - I did install ubuntu before, but I used that very little, so ubuntu didn't get me into GNU/Linux (probably because GNOME sucks bad).I really do not mind tasks with the highest level of difficulty, as long as I can see the next step to take towards completion.Gentoo wasn't particularly hard to install due to the step by step wiki, the actual hard part was getting the damn GPU to work - courtesy of nvidia (I no longer use or purchase nvidia GPU's (thankfully I've only ever purchased nvidia GPU's second hand), aside from maybe ones that work properly with nouveau).
