Does anyone know of any self help type books or resources for women who struggle with their weight as a result of trauma? I need something that can help me now, and I don’t have the time to go through the process of not only finding a therapist who can help, but then being lucky enough to maybe work on one concept a week that may or may not help. I have gained so much weight because I can’t handle the harassment from group therapy, I can’t handle the situation with the guy I was seeing years ago, I can’t handle what my most recent ex did to me.

@RockTheBoat Don’t know a book but I recommend Overeaters Anonymous. It’s free/voluntary small donation only.

@ninapaley I’ll look into this. I remember seeing ads in the paper for these groups, but that was pre-pandemic. I hope at least one is still around.

@RockTheBoat Dawn French wrote an autobiography, and I'm sure she discussed trauma-related weight gain. I know it's not therapy, but sometimes reading about someone else can help indirectly. From what you've written, it sounds like you need to let go of even thinking about dealing with anything at all (I can't handle x3). Carrying around excess weight limits how much we can literally carry - if you want a place to start, maybe start by doing nothing and take enough time out to catch your breath. Try and focus on carrying only yourself, and take more notice of how that feels for you. In a weird way, part of the weight gain could be your way of forcing you to become heavier so you have to take notice of yourself... I know that stuffing down food can help to dull emotion, and act as a barrier between us and them. But, because you say 'I can't handle' so often, I can't help thinking you're trying to tell yourself something with that. There's a yoga teacher on youtube who sometimes does affirmations, and it can be interesting to see how you feel about repeating them. Often, it'll give you a place to start because whatever is uncomfortable will usually point to issues. I can find a link if you want me to. I think what I'm trying to say is that if you can get into a dialogue with yourself, you should be able to get a handle on you.

@QuinnLeigh Oh thanks, if you can find a link, that would be great! I’ve been on this roller coaster before….I am a CSA survivor and have been overweight my whole adult life, save for a brief period about 10 years ago when I lost a lot of weight. I had NO idea that I’d suddenly get a lot of attention, and I gained back the weight, plus some. Last year I attempted to lose weight and I dropped about 40 pounds, but I’ve gained back almost all of that because of getting more attention, plus other issues as well. I’m tired of the up/down weight. The toll on my mental health is the worst. I want to be a healthy weight as I feel so much better. I know I have psychological hurdles to overcome. I need to be able to somehow deal with the attention I get from men without letting it derail my health. I didn’t mean that I wasn’t going to at least try to deal with these issues in therapy, in case anyone is wondering. I will talk to my therapist about it tomorrow. Maybe she won’t be able to help much? I guess I know I just need something more than once a week therapy as I need to somehow throw a wrench in the gears right now.

@RockTheBoat @QuinnLeigh I don't know the context of this, but going up and down on the scale is far worse than being overweight. I would strongly suggest you look at possible physiological reasons for your weight and I don't mean conventional doctors and their "calories in, calories out" trope.I had problems with my weight and wasn't diagnosed as SEVERELY hypothyroid until the chronic condition nearly killed me. The only way I could lose weight was by extreme physical activity and very low caloric intake, and the body does not like that! I was starving myself and in the end the body will win because our bodies want to LIVE.It is very difficult to find good doctors, but a place to start is Stop the Thyroid Madness. You need the right tests, not that damnable TSH which often shows up as normal because it does not test actual thyroid hormone output. The second thing that has helped me considerably is taking Lugol's solution, an ingestible iodine. For the first time in my adult life I stopped craving sugar completely. I personally believe that iodine helps those of us who are hypothyroid (estimates range from 40 to 90 percent of the U.S. population) use our replacement natural desiccated thyroid most efficiently.

@RockTheBoat I like the sound of these following titles:The Body Keeps The Score: Brain Mind and Body In The Healing of Trauma (this one is written by a man, so maybe not the best book for your purposes).Lifting Heavy Things: Healing Trauma One Rep at a TimeNourish: How to Heal Your Relationship With Food, Body & SelfI highly recommend checking the library first, so you don't have to spend any money on finding healing. But it seems like there's economical options, if you don't mind gently used or Kindle versions of these books.

@EatKnitSleep @Kay I looked into Fat is A Feminist Issue and decided to start here. The reviews are….interesting. I tend to gravitate towards the negative reviews as if I see a pattern and it’s something that indicates that I wouldn’t like it, then I shy away. But, that wasn’t the case here as the negative reviews were about how it’s a horrible book because so many of us don’t have emotional eating issues (why these people even need a “self help” psychological book is beyond me, as they’d just need to learn about nutrition and buy a healthy cookbook), and people saying it’s outdated because the psych world has shifted to a body acceptance model. Well, I’m overweight and I wake up in the mornings feeling horrible. I don’t honestly believe that people can be healthy at any size. Yes, body acceptance is important and we shouldn’t beat ourselves up for not having a perfect body, but that’s very different from thinking that we can truly be healthy when carrying so much extra weight. (If anyone else thinks I’m being judgmental of fat people, that is not my intent. I just don’t believe it’s healthy.) I decided to buy this book as my local library doesn’t have it, my statewide access is locked as my card is old, and even if I get it through the statewide system, I can only have it for 3 weeks. I did reserve The Body Keeps The Score, but I’m on the waiting list for now.
