@GluedToTheScreen wait… we have a CO2 shortage??? Isn’t that the evil gas that we have too much of that causes global warming/cooling, droughts/floods?

@GluedToTheScreen Working in the brewing industry, there are multiple types of CO2: general (what we exhale), Food grade CO2 (cleaner) & the highest grade is Beverage grade CO2 (cleanest). The cost of Beverage grade CO2 has increased. Not sure how these various high-end grades are made. Maybe a by-product of refining crude? If oil refinement is down, then ALL by-products of oil refinement is reduced. Which NA has pointed out over the past year too.

@GluedToTheScreen Also, look at the volume of carbonated beverages exist next time you're at the store. ALL of those carbonated beverages were made with Beverage grade CO2.

@Laren @GluedToTheScreen I understand the different types of CO2 you mention, and acknowledge the absurd number of carbonated beverages but how could beer have a shortage of CO2 when that is a byproduct of fermentation? I guess I always assumed, at least for beer, a part of the bottling/packaging was capturing at least some that CO2, which is my experience with brewing my own beer. I defer to you as you worked in the field commercially, is there something I misunderstand?

@filergj @GluedToTheScreen Yes, beer is making CO2 during fermentation. But, after centrifuging & filtering, it maybe under carbed for packaging, we'll have to add CO2 for product consistency. Also, when emptying the bright tank for packaging, we'll put CO2 into the tank to maintain a certain PSI until the tank is empty of beer. Then after cleaning the tank, we'll use CO2 to purge the tank of almost all oxygen. O² will make the beer go bad prematurely or foster other bad biologics.

@filergj @GluedToTheScreen Some breweries do have a CO² capture system. But those systems are very $$$$. And unless you build a brewery with that, to retro fit a facility is $$$ too.

@Laren @GluedToTheScreen You're just going to have to use the exaust gas out of a 1985 Dodge Omni GLH as a substitute. A little cobon monoxide for that extra zing. New Yuengling Extra Dodge.

@Laren @GluedToTheScreen that all makes sense. Figured I was missing something, but that is a big something. Thank you for the explanation

@filergj @GluedToTheScreen Sure, no problem. Just on the processing side, from a bright tank getting cleaned, purged, filled with beer & then emptied again, that tank will be filled with CO² twice. So if a 100 barrel (1barrel, bbl = 31 gallons) tank is processed, that is 200 bbl of CO² used. Still not completely sure how these grades of CO² made. I should probably look into that. Must be something on the manufacturing side of the food grade & beverage grade that is causing the shortages.
