Today in dumb hot takesIt is always funny to see the wignat/far right railing against completely innocuous things like vegan/vegetarian meat substitutes. While it is true that these are niche products, and that at least in the West, mostly amounts to performative virtue signaling (something that is the first to go whenever times are tough), calling it “poison” is just plain retarded. And of course, if something doesn’t make immediate, surface level, intuitive sense, that means it must be a conspiracy, or otherwise evidence of malevolent influence (probably by Jews).There are two big reasons this stuff hangs around, and neither of them have to do with conspiracist dribble.The first and probably most important one is that this entire class of product is very cheap to produce compared to the real thing. It simply takes far less of a cheap thing (vegetables, legumes, etc.) to produce the end result, and on top of that, it lends itself to automation in a way that a slaughterhouse does not. What this means are that the profit margins are very high. Now, anybody who has had this end result will tell you that it simply isn’t comparable to real meat, and it isn’t. It is its own thing, and usually pretty low quality. That leads into the second big reason:Target market. These substitutes are aimed squarely at people who cannot (due to health or religious reasons) or will not eat meat (PETA clowns, shitlibs, fad dieters), and who are too lazy to cook, or who want to eat something that looks similar to what all their friends are eating. If you ever seen shitty, zero alcohol beer? It’s kind of like that; a fake version of a product that mostly exists for social reasons. Nobody is going to drink O’Douls without reason to either.The other thing about this target market is that they usually have lots of disposable income. Veganism or vegetarianism is a luxury that nobody on a fixed income is going to uphold. And so all of these meat substitutes are more expensive than the real product.Also, note the picture used here. Very little on the shelf, but real meat is still available. I’m guessing this is a picture from when the coronavirus pandemic started and there was an idiotic run on grocery stores. What this means is that preference was still a greater priority for most people than literally having anything to eat. If there is literally no other option, then even this stuff would be gone. But other options were still available, just not the one that people wanted as their first choice. And if you had literally any other choice, would you be eating this expensive product which amounts to the Apple of “meat”? If you wanted to cook hamburgers tonight, but there was no ground beef available, would you purchase the fake meat, or would you just have something else instead?Engage your brain, people.

They’re alright, only had an Impossible burger once, was fairly expensive compared to real meat and unprocessed legumes. From some of the articles I've read, the bigger companies (beyond and impossible) tend to give deep discounts, or even just pay them to feature their product for advertising/exposure purposes. And they can get away with doing this because it is so cheap to make.
