But even worse than the dachshunds we had as patients was the shepherd mix that weighed at least 2x more than it should have. Owner had downs syndrome and never gave her dog its thyroid meds. Still don't know how the hell the dog lived as long as it did.

That being said, I have 3 cats on prescription food due to urinary issues. It disgusts me knowing what's in that food. But I almost lost 1 of them due to urinary blockage and I have yet to find a healthier alternative. So if it's between feeding him overly processed garbage or him not being able to pee... I'll take the garbage.

@WhiteDissidentRadio yeah I've heard that from a lot of people trying to switch pedigree or something like that to higher quality. I always equate to giving a choice between junk food and health food, or health food covered in junk to make it palatable. You can try adding a high quality supplement to her food and try to make the switch again when she gets a bit older? Just speaking from personal experience here.

@WhiteDissidentRadio thank you for the recommendation! I have looked into royal canin in the past, but at the time the ingredients list looked poor considering how expensive it is. But compared to the ingredients in what I'm feeding those 3 cats now, royal canin is better. And cost is about the same on Chewy if I bundle order wet and dry so I'm looking into that for a future order. Thanks again!

While they did come from wolves, they evolved to eat human food, sort of. Dogs became domesticated by eating the garbage that villagers would leave on the outskirts of their village. This means, yes, the evolved domesticated dog has evolved to eat certain grains and cooked food.Remember that the dogs that survived best on human leftovers were the dogs that were bred to be pets. I'm not saying to feed your dog human food, but I am saying that things you wouldn't associate wild dogs eating are perfectly fine and sometimes nutritious for a domesticated dog. Commercial dog food has only been a thing for the last 80 years or so. Before that, dogs were fed scraps. And now dogs are undergoing another type of selective breeding. The ones that do best on commercial dog foods, that live the longest, are the ones that have been selectively bred.Dog diet is tricky. Some dogs can eat literally anything and digest it fine. Some dogs can only have a strict diet of bland foods.

But sometimes it means organs, which are necessary in a diet.Also add legumes to that list - it is currently what they believe is causing food-related heart disease in cats and dogs. Also don't feel too bad about that prescription food. It's been lab tested out the ass. Sure it might not be the most fun thing to eat, but it's helping to keep your cats healthy. The reason a lot of those prescription foods are Rx only is because it does not mean a country's standards on the min/max of a nutrient. For example, cats with renal failure need a really low protein diet as the kidneys have a lot of trouble filtering out the protein, and you're trying to reduce as much work for the kidneys as possible. Well those K/d diets actually have below the minimum required protein for cats, so it's not considered safe for all cats.So yeah, it's not worth losing your cat over it.
