Any HAM's [heroes of the apocalypse] out there willing to point me in the direction of good resources? I picked up a set of cheap Baofengs (UV-5R's) for use around my property, but I'm interested in getting more into radio.

@Tjunta Do you have HAM license? I'd recommend getting that first. I too started with a UV-5R. Now using Icom ID-51a. They're great and made in Japan. Most importantly they have a digital protocol called D-Star which makes it easy to talk to other HAM's using D-Star all over the world!

@Tjunta Lotta good videos though some are certainly commercials. The Chinese stuff is great for getting into it and for the ability to operate outside of the ham bands in a real SHTF situation but the front end receiver and filter is crappy. You can het all kinds of really good and feature packed stuff if your budget allows and depending on what you want to do.Try http://hamradiocrashcourse.com as a start and if you watch his vids in YouTube the algo will throw other stuff at you too.

@Tjunta The good thing about Josh is that he’s not a gear snob.He IS affiliated with a few manufacturers that he makes a point os disclosing. You won’t get any Baofeng shaming from him like you might from other ham content creators. And like I said the algorithm starts loading you up with ham related channels once you watch a few of his.https://youtube.com/c/HamRadioCrashCourse

@Tjunta I know that @bigl0af will recommend you get a CB radio. When the conditions are good, you’ll get all over the North American continent. I’d suggest you learn to code, but I’m a tiny bit of a Morse code snob, though I’m pretty crap at it. 20W Chinese radio and a key, with a whip antenna on the roof of your car will get you 600 miles on 7MHz without a problem. So I guess it comes down to what do you want it to do for you ?

@ChrisWilson @bigl0af I'd like to get there eventually, but for right now I'm just using the radios for line of sight comms on my property. It has been great so far in helping to keep my human resources engaged in things like walnut harvesting, stick cleanup, etc.
