as i understand it, in the countries where wine was historically produced, it's not really considered a luxury product at all. you mostly serve it with food, and it's cheap and plentiful. but you drink it in moderation. but i also hear there's a bit of a generational split, where older people might have a glass of wine with lunch, whereas younger people are less likely to do that.

@thor in France, it's quite normal for people in their forties (or younger) to prefer beer rather than wine for a normal lunch, but more formal lunch will almost always be served with wine.At home, we almost never drink wine, but when I am with my parents it's almost 1 bottle a day. @PierreM the idea of a "formal lunch" would be rather alien to us.when it comes to business, it's more common to have a meeting than to have lunch.you might have conventions, seminars or other gatherings where some light food, cake and coffee is served, but it would be rather fanciful if wine was served.but the artists and bohemian sort of people could have wine early in the day. but i've only seen that in Oslo, a relatively cosmopolitan area compared to the rest of the country.

@PierreM the cities of Norway would be the only places where having wine outside of a party or a bar might not lift any eyebrows. elsewhere, in more rural parts, you might be suspected of being an alcoholic.
