What happened to the nvidia drivers that made everyone hate them so much? They absolutely ruled from 2006-2012, and we had direct contact with an Nvidia driver developer on IRC for feedback and bug reports and testing... Nothing could run glxgears faster than Nvidia

@feld @jeffcliff myriad of problems related to them when using them. Stuff like sleep not working properly, weird issues with some older games (killing floor 1), compositing locking up until restart, even audio breaking, some other weridness (that goes away if you switch away from nvidia). Not to mention issues with hybrid graphics on laptops.I'm guessing that nvidia is actually good but it got stuck in past and not many people have contact with devs while nvidia themselves aren't very interested in developing linux/unix driver, so MESA and AMD's progress outpaced nvidia's. Inserting nvidia card into a computer still feels like deliberately cursing your machine.

wouldn't it be sufficient to just have a cloud server that does (maybe: web) IRC for you and you relaunch it occasionally to get a new IP address?is that not anonymous enough or are you that worried about your billing information being tied to your server?
