@skadi Very understandable. I was wondering a few days ago what it would take to learn to bind books made from libgen PDFs.

@kaia @7 @skadi yeah printing it works.Much cheaper even if its not free.If i was doing that id probably print a chapter at a time rather than the whole book at once

@Arcana @placholdr @skadi People from non Afro-Asiatic background do struggle with Arabic phonology. The first thing anyone needs to remember is that we don’t have any extra muscles or abilities, just that we practice from an early age. Before dropping a penny on a book, watch and listen to Arabs pronouncing Arabic. You can learn the letters and a good enough approximation of their sounds for free.

@Arcana @placholdr @skadi if you must, buy children books from Arab countries or bookstoresI may be able to help or share free resources but first try to find free videos and lectures online. You need to hear the letters pronounced to know that you are mispronouncing them

@awl Most of them, sadly. Russian, Arabic, Sanskrit, and Mandarin have been at the top of my list for most of my life, now that I'm getting kind of okay at Russian I figure it would be alright to try and get the basics of another language and Arabic is the most interesting one right now

@Arcana @awl Yeah, one of my major reasons for trying to learn Arabic instead of Mandarin is that I'm also really interested in other Semitic languages, especially Classical Hebrew and Ge'ez

@skadi oi bruv libgen.rs is a site where some evil pirate, interested in this type of thing might find it. I just wanted to warn you, to make sure that you definitely don't get it for free

@skadi @Arcana @awl Arabic itself is a macro language. You will spend a lot of time learning it if you go beyond Classical Arabic. Arabic varieties differ in phonology, grammar, and vocabulary.I personally want to learn Mandarin. I already learned enough Japanese (N3) and therefore familiar with the writing system. Though Mandarin ends up being a simpler language overall than Japanese according to everyone who learned both and told me so.

@skadi @Arcana @awl Classical Arabic is a living language though some people will make absurd claims about its death and about how Arabs don’t understand it. We do understand it but it is a high language associated with certain occasions that make most people shy away from using it. I wouldn’t use it unless the situation calls for it. Otherwise it feels like I am being pompous for no reason.

@Arcana @awl @skadi You wouldn’t use if with your friends but you would use it if you were delivering the Friday sermon. People who want to add a sense of authority to what they are saying will mix in some Classical.Songs [minority of] are still written in it and they still do chart but most songs are in the local dialects.https://youtu.be/JnA8zuKgsAM

@Arcana @awl @skadi Aramaic is perhaps the language that influenced [sedantry/urban] Arabic more than any other. The Meccans were urbanites like the Nabateans before them, their dialects were related. The Nabateans adopted Aramaic as an official language and so Classical Arabic grammar follows Aramaic in certain places, like how, when and where the final feminine t is simplified to h.Aramaic song:https://youtu.be/_-qGY20OWuw
