Crossing the Street Shouldn't Be Deadly (but it is)Crossing the street should be safe, convenient, and easy, but it isn't. And that's because in the US and Canada, the roads are designed for exactly one purpose: to move lots of cars as quickly as possible. #roadsafety #pedestrian #NotJustBikes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ByEBjf9ktY

Such a world of difference holy shit! :amaze:Here in the #Netherlands, people driving a #car are almost afraid of people on a #bike If you want or need to drive a car you also need to bare the responsibility of such a monster vehicleOften you see people hate on cyclists from a car perspective. Well I can telly ou one thing, if you do that here you are f*cked and in the wrong country Don't fuck with bikes

@stux The hate for cyclists is well founded but also doesnt apply to the netherlands for one important reason: infrastructure. In the netherlands bikes and cars are completely separate except when maybe crossing over the road for a turn or something. In other countries the bikes and cars share the same road and same lanes too. This means a car behind a bike needs to go at bike speeds,, so naturally it pisses people off.

@stux do people not do "big shops" there? I use my car for the fortnightly shop (well I used to, I get it delivered now) there's no way it would all fit on a bike and most of the large supermarkets are out of town. We seem to have designed for cars here! (UK)

@Tattooed_mummy Some! In the past it was more a thing :blobcathearts: For example, my dad does the 'big shopping' once a week and with the car indeed :blobcatgiggle:But many younger people going by the store once a day for some quick stuff for that day 💪 Most supermarkets etc are on the way or on a little walking/biking distance

@freemo Totally! Plus it's often a 'kind' of cyclist :blobcatgiggle: who drives on the roads instead of the biking lane for exampleHere in the NL we also got some of them and they are also not liked so much. But thats more of a choice!

@Tattooed_mummy @stux most cargo bikes can load up more than the average car trunk can take ;-) And if you need to carry big things, there's always a Carla trailer to borrow.

@stux @Tattooed_mummy exactly or an Urban Arrow, a Tern or a Yuba. There are many interesting bikes that you can use for daily traffic with kids or cargo or without anything. And you get them with e-support or without with just muscle power.

@stux In many places there simply are no biking lanes. The road is where the cyclist is **supposed** to be, even though they block traffic. It is like that in philadelphia, almost no bike lanes, the bikes are expected to occupy the same lanes as the cars.

@stux On a positive note, all those wide roads can easily have protected bike paths added to them once the Americans wake up from their car-culture induced coma.

@stux The average road in America has got more holes in it than an average Dutch acre with horses.
