I've reached an odd point in my life when it comes to eyesight. I'm near sighted, which means I need glasses to see far away but not to read. Historically, I just put on my glasses and go about my day. Lately, I can't read with my glasses on. My eyes can't shift the focus like they could before. I can read fine with them off. I need to put my head in the sweet spot where I can take my glasses off and I'm not too far away to read things clearly or I have to be far enough away to see with glasses.

@mike I'm the exact opposite. Far away is fine for me, but can't read well up close. Have been using progressives for a few years. Took some getting used to, but don't have to keep taking my glasses off. Look better than bifocals too.

@mike I sympathize. I'm extremely near sited, but with my contacts in, I'm far sited. I have readers of varying powers laying all over the house and office. 1.5x for reading books/whatever, 1.0x for most computer use. Unless it's the early morning or late evening, when I've taken my contacts out to give my eyes a break, and I'm wearing my prescription glasses, then I just have to hold everything a little farther away...It's a hassle that I've learned to live with.Middle age rocks.

@mike I had to get slightly weaker glasses for reading and computer use as far back as my early 30s. I wear them all the time unless I'm going outside.

@buck10 My wife has progressives, but they're weird for her because they don't work when she's wearing them naturally. She has to push them down her nose like a librarian to get them farther from her face to be able to read clearly, but push them back up to see far away clearly. Better than me having to take mine off and put them back on all the time, but it can look a little weird.

@mike at least this eyesight problem offers the opportunity to enjoy the view (albeit a tad blurred) of a nice behind while sparing from seeing ugly faces 🤡 #positivethinking

@mike Your lenses lack elasticity with growing age. It's a common phenomenon.

@mike similar situation here. I currently have progressives but they suck for screen work. Vertical lines aren't vertical anymore and the field of vision is too narrow to work on a big screen (phone screen is fine).Getting old sucks. Not getting old sucks even more...

@mike haha, ya, I have that problem with cheap reading glasses. My kids mock me every time I wear them when I don't want to risk breaking my glasses. I think the term grandpa comes out a lot.

@mike I was doing that for years, and would look under my glasses to read something up close. Last year, that became a strain and I was forced to go with progressive lenses. Really close up things I can take off my glasses to read, but that middle distance needed help.

@hirozed Yea, I have to be within about a foot to read clearly without my glasses, and easily two feet away to read with them. There's that middle ground where it sucks no matter what I do.

@mike I finally relented and went for progressives because the eye strain was too much in that middle distance.I had to also get a pair of distance-only glasses for watching tv. If I got too comfortable, my field of vision would approach the near sighted section of my glasses.

@mike I wear glasses normally due to being farsighted. When I'm reading a book, playing a handheld, or really anything that involves something close to my face, I tend to take them off. In my case, it's because I can get away from wearing glasses for a bit. I don't mind glasses, but sometimes it's nice to take them off when you don't need them on.

@mike I'm not saying this would work for you or even if it's a good idea, but I worked out with my optometrist that I would get half strength glasses to make it less stressful on my eyes when I needed to be in meetings and looking at both a near laptop and a far presentation display. I like it a lot.

@mike yeah my optometrist says this is in my future. I haven't really noticed it yet, but the last time I had my prescription updated my guy said my near sight is starting to deteriorate.

@mike You’re definitely not alone, I have to take my glasses off to read books or my phone. I tried several pairs of contacts to balance both, but it’s impossible to fix one without negatively affecting the other. I also have astigmatism in one eye which further compounds the difficulty.

@mike Me too. I'm spending a lot of time with my glasses perched on my forehead and the phone, book, crossword puzzle just inches from my nose.

@mike @joel Tip: if (/when, eventually) you get cataracts, they'll fix it by replacing your lenses. Those lenses can actually correct your near-sightedness as well. Costs a bit extra, but saves you an extra procedure.
