Loonix would be 10 times better if they literally swapped out gnu coreutils with bsd ones

@meeper I wonder how much stuff would break because sh is bash in a bunch of distros

@meeper I know bash isn't part of coreutils but I guess you would replace that too

@meeper GNU coreutils are the best you can get, as they're the fastest ones.GNU isn't just limited to the coreutils mind you, GNU contains far more software - the coreutils is just one package.

@orekix Bash would be bash not /bin/sh if your shell script is /bin/sh on Linux it should be POSIXishDoesnt debian use dash as its default shell

@orekix I softlink /bin/sh to be dash and yes it did break a few ebuilds for me, but none recently.

@meeper@outerheaven.club you know, nobody's forcing you to use those other than the distro maintainersbesides of course, the binary incompatibility, you can replace GNU core utilities with other implementations. this is probably not standard just because we depend on them as a standard due to their widespread use. if these programs don't behave like we expect, half of the userspace would fall apartbut the alternatives do mostly behave how you'd expect if i'm not mistaken, so you could maybe try and report back

@meeper >if your shell script is /bin/sh on Linux it should be POSIXishLinux has nothing to do with the shell, so I'm not sure why you even mentioned it.What makes you think that it should be POSIXsh?bash can indeed handle POSIX sh, so there's nothing wrong with softlinking /bin/sh to bash, but it's wrong to assume /bin/sh is bash and use non-POSIX shell commands.

@Suiseiseki I suppose for grep and find being faster matter much more but bsd are much more simpler and don't infodump on the manpage or help outputGNU apparently doesn't realize how important this isI and several people avoided using some commands because the gnu manual or help was impossible to read.In fact busybox's help output was much more usefulIf I ever forget the syntax of a command I rather run busybox to get the help output instead of the manpage because of this. Also gnu often just adds several redundant extensions or aliases, at least significantly more than bsds which just makes the prior problem much more significant. Also is gnu source code is generally just much worse and navigating it is much more diffcultGnu and bsds both are free, it's just that gnu misses important points of usability for dumb reasonsHaving tools be simpler to understand is very important and bsds seem commited to good manpages while gnu just tosses them aside as it appearsAlso I havent even touched on the man-info debacle(if your manpages are already such an infodump why does info even exist)

@Suiseiseki scripts with #!/bin/sh on most Linux systems are posix as a convention bash scripts are rather called as #!/bin/bash

@meeper @GNUxeava They should write their own coreutils and quit using other people’s coreutils.

@jollyrogue @GNUxeava I think one of the linux devs has stated that they genuinely think that the bsd way of in house development of the userspace is better

@meeper @GNUxeava They replaced ifconfig with iptools because iptools was coupled with the kernel, so….I think the BSDs have the better idea about being a cohesive OS, but I’m biased.
