Right up until you find yourself laying in your back with some 6018 trying to unfuck something that isn't supposed to break like it did but the steering wheel holder just shrugs and says I don't k ow how that happened.

@matty I’ve been welding for about 3 days. It’s not hard at all. My father used to weld on aircraft for Lockheed Martin. My grandfather was a welder at Ford Motor Company. My uncle welded for Connie Kalitta and Jack Roush. I never touched it myself until this week. That’s a pretty solid weld for someone that’s been welding since Monday.

@matty I’m MiG welding. That’s mild steel, about 1/8 thickness. The technique I used makes it look more like a different type of welding called TiG.TiG looks pretty and when it’s done right, it looks like a stack of dimes on stainless or aluminum.MiG is so simple even I can do it after 3 days. TiG is much harder, requires more control but looks much nicer on aluminum and stainless.

@matty I’m just playing around. I work afternoons at a great job where the machines run pretty well. I’m maintenance so I don’t do shit all night.They’ve got a Miller 211 here with a bottle and told me I could play with it all I want.I’m thinking about practicing every day and bringing in my dad’s TiG machine and git gud. I know places where I can make really great money with TiG skills.I wish I had asked my dad to show me before he passed away. That son of a bitch could TiG weld aluminum foil together.

@matty @Tripp No. You probably want to start out with MiG. It’s 75% Argon, 25% CO2. Your local welding supply store will either sell or rent you a tank. You’ll need a little regulator and you’ll also need a good power source.Needs to be on a 30A breaker if you want a good welder.

@d0c40r0 @matty @Tripp Good choice. I’d start out with 200amp. Anything less and you’re not going to really be able to weld something 1/8” comfortably. Decent choice.

@matty @Tripp It can run on 110v at a slightly less thick capacity. Ideally you want 220v, but machines run on 110v just fine.

@matty @d0c40r0 @Tripp You can get set up with a good starter welder under a thousand. MiG. TiG and stick, also wire feed. Think of it this way, if you learn how to weld at home and have fun with it, you’ll always have a marketable skill. You will always have a decent paying job with some effort and a bit of lying on a resume.

@matty @d0c40r0 @Tripp @WhiteDissidentRadio They have those super cheap chinesium welders on ebay and AliExpress for like $70. Lots of YouTube channels show the good bad and ugly on them, and the general recommendation is they're "okay" for something you'll use occsduonally, but not amazing. I think the biggest flaw was they couldn't really hit their states amperage, so you were stuck at lower amps.
