@parker @graf If we started setting up LORA internet gateways this could be more than local. [Most] towns and cities are have high spots to place routing nodes. This is all line of site. Put a node up high and it can route traffic to the gateways. If you want communication for an even area set up one on a balloon. you’re allowed to have a tethered balloon up to 400 feet. which would cover a minimum of a 3 mile radius.

That was my thought too, whoever wants to set up a local network in their community can do so, with i2p, packet radio, etc., linking communities together.

@parker @VIcFury @graf I've long considered this but there's only so much interest. Mesh and community networking is super focused on "disadvantaged communities" and not alternative/disaster/etc comms.

@VIcFury @parker @graf I'm not sure lora is much use for anything stronger than IM or an 'orderwire' in such an application, but it does have roles.

@VIcFury @parker @graf Indeed! It's just hard to get people excited about a network that's mostly for text messaging capability.

This looks kind of interesting to fuck around with butA) It's ChineseB) Internet of Things more like Internet of ShitC) How sure can we be as noobs that we can make this good and useful and work for us and and not make this suck like commercial IoT "solutions" that basically just turn our appliances into botnets? It looks like a neat cheapo fuckaround toy but idk

Buzzwords aside, it's just low power radio. For now I'm happy with the software meshtastic provides, focusing on a simple standalone communications network independent of the existing telecommunications & power grids. At the very least, I want to be able to send text messages independent of my cellphone provider.

That's the best thing about it, normies wouldn't like it. Though I have been testing how far I can compress images with the BPG format.

I mean, the link above is just pcb design files, a list of pretty generic parts, and some Arduino code. Put it together myself, read through the code, there's nothing particularly fancy or egregious to it. Especially compared to the closed source Huawei routers Telus provides to everyone in Canada now.

The firmware is a bit lacking for them at the moment, though I have seen them mentioned in the meshtastic forums as something to add support for. Otherwise, I'll spend some time making a text based forum to use them with.

@parker @graf Here's an idea. Winlink, but for meshtastic devices. No need to use HAM callsign either. Just connect to a node that can relay a message over the internet to another node on the far end of the earth, to their meshtastic communicator.

I think I'm going to wait a bit, meshtastic recently added firmware for a RPi pico + LoRa module, and they've also got designs going through for a similar blackberry style handheld that uses a pico.
