since there’s so many of you now i’d like to take the time to remind you that while it’s good you’re here with us, the strength of the fediverse and its resiliency lasts in spreading out. having everyone on one specific server (such as poast in this case) makes it easier for someone to target us to take down individuals they dont like (see the keffals drama if you need an example of this)to make sure the fediverse is healthy it’s wise for you to make your own servers for your own communities. some of you will say “i dont have any administration experience,” or “i don’t know linux” or something similar – we have a website that can help you set up your own instance for the low cost of free (providing you give oracle your CC#) or for a very low cost for single user or small groups. using the fediverse.express tool to install everything for you is also no cost. this puts you in control of your own data and destiny. be your own janny and clean up your own mess (or your friends)you can self host at home if thats your kind of thing, I believe fediverse.express will also work with setting it up for you if you dont want to, but there are guides on how to set up your own like poast. ours is built off a much better fork of pleroma called ReBased which can be installed quickly and easily manually by following the guide at https://soapbox.pub/install/if you need recommendations for a host, I’d suggest BuyVM/Frantech as they offer cheap, reliable and free speech respecting hosting for something like this.there are lots of guides available and i and many other owners and/or admins can help you if you run into questions. most of us are approachable and will help when we canthe guy who develops our stuff? thats @alex with the help of @mkljczk and others. ways to support Alex are available in his biothat being said, a lot of you dont care or just want to be here or whatever in which case we welcome you. if you like what we do here consider a crypto or fiat donation to keep poast running. thanks for being here and we are looking forward to the growth of fediverse as a whole as this takes away the stranglehold on public discourse

Yes, there's also some reddit-alikes with lemmy and lotide which are also both fully federated as well. Lots of great options, and because they're federated you can join discussions with others with your own instances.I'm a big fan of the community on wolfballs.com and participate a lot from my own lotide instance, but there's lots of different instances out there, and they're interoperable unless someone goes out of their way to make them not interoperable -- which goes to graf's point.

In fact you can connect with even more people if you self-host, because you basically isolate yourself from instances blocking each other. It's the only way to do it as far as I'm concerned. I'm still connected to a lot of the same people I did when I started on No Agenda Social 5 years ago. I migrated in 2020 when that instance got blocked, and then again just last week when I noticed my new instance was blocking others.I already owned a domain name and signed up for AWS for $5/month, free the first 3 months. No cost up front. @graf I set up my own instance using Pleroma by just following their guide for it. I do have a decent amount of experience setting up Linux servers, but it's really not that hard for someone to figure out. You don't even have to bother setting up emails if you don't run registration, like I don't. If you are running an instance just for yourself, you can also not mirror any content and then you need very little storage space and everything runs smoothly.

You should already know of someone on another server you want to follow - search their name directly and follow them. Then when they share stuff, you’ll find other people to follow. Relays bloat up your database and harm performance. Following only people you care about is efficient.Think of it like planting a seed.

@graf @alex @mkljczk Yeah believe it or not this was the last Sun workstation made.So I decided to host a Pleroma server on this and after half a month or so of struggling thanks to OpenBSD Elixir being broken/out of date, I decided to try Debian and after struggling to get on Kernel 4.19 (which is the last series IIRC to work on the specific CPU in mine without panicking hard), I'm now running my power bill up hosting Pleroma on probably the shittiest hardware one can come up with idea wise.Okay it could be worse it could be IA64.

I should try Pleroma on Oracle Solaris 11.GNU Social "should" work on more platforms since it's PHP, but I had issues setting it up on OpenBSD and to make things worse somehow my setup was hosed and it wasn't able to properly handle activitypub. I have no idea what the cause for it is, but Pleroma is running great here somehow.Which was the reason I did this, I wanted to see just how terrible the hardware for Pleroma has to be for a okay single user instance and this is clearly weaker than a modern quad-core RPi 4. There's plenty of old C2D or worse, P4 boxes out there in ewaste piles worldwide.

There's a lot of stupid CPU upgrades for Macs as well, along with literally soldering in new PPC CPUs like the infamous 7448 upgrade. Or the ROM board for the older Mac machines that allows you to boot an OS from the ROM. Oh and don't forget the people running OS X on Beige macs.But programming them? Nah. None of them do that except for the TenFourFox guy, who literally bought a Power9 desktop, had a Power6 before that, owns an ANS (the AIX Apple server), and a few UNIX laptops. He's a true madlad IMO.

There's not as many as there are for the Amiga for sure, nor is there a TerribleFire style upgrade for Macs yet. In fact the guy who made the Mac floppy emu not open sourcing it is having that bite him in the ass because of component shortages.The other thing keeping new upgrade cards from being made is the fact that Macs were so common in the USA and sold vastly more, to the point that you can literally just go on eBay and buy a specific Mac from a specific era, unless you're looking for a specific in demand model like the 9600 or Quad G5. So when there is a demand for custom upgrades, it's usually stuff like custom soldering faster CPUs into lamp G4s. At one point there was a demand for Mac upgrades (to keep old Macs going longer), which faded out with Intel.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnpdLt4OIFsThere were also similar upgrades made for PCs (and in Japan, the PC-98/FM Towns/x68k) that allowed you to use newer CPUs on older boards. With the PC-98 in particular (due to their high cost), these were super popular and it's not uncommon to find a used PC-98 where the last owner threw in a Winchip or Overdrive in the machine. On the flipside, BlueSCSI and similar came out of the Mac camp. BlueSCSI unfortunately only seems to work the best on Macs and PC SCSI cards because of termination weirdness. Despite what I said there are a few wild hacks for Intel macs, usually like crossflashing the firmware to allow newer CPUs. There was also the infamous "GPU cross-flashing" trick done on the Mac to allow Macs to use cheaper PC video cards. But the cool one is the Libreboot port to the MacBook2,1 and 1,1 as they have similar hardware to the X60/T60 but can be found easier used.

My Pleroma instance ran without frobbing for over a year, until I upgraded the machine from Ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 and had to reboot. Costs me $7.20/month, including automatic weekly backups.

The 1st reason I moved to Pleroma was I read that it was harder to block #Pleroma instances from #Mastodon. Is this true?@alex, if you make #Rebased even more impervious to Mastodon blocks, than Pleroma, that will be a huge selling feature that will make others switch. #1 problem of the #Fediverse is all the instances blocking others.

Looks like I've managed to update to latest Rebased.Now my installation says: Pleroma 2.4.53-1896-g332b96b0.develop+soapboxWhere's "Rebased" label? Is it correct?In short words, I edited git remote origin, then i pulled. Then I needed to recompile erlang+elixir. Then I downloaded all dependencies +2 new deps. Then compiling died at phoenix_live_dashboard (what is it?) so I followed indication, to compile itself the dependency. Then I compiled all the stuff. In the end I made a successiful migration then restarted flawless.I'm still unsure for the "Pleroma" version ... And the Phoenix stuff

it's a nice idea! To me 2.x is still the main choice. Although is lacking of features, it's easier readable with visual impairing. Texts are bigger and enough contrasted (WCAG2AA)I tried to backport the emoji menu update but I'm not skilled enough. We're going to stay sticky at 2.x until it's still working
