@art The first option always felt like the standard (to me), but only since we switched to 10-digit dialing.I often use the second option when I want the layout to look nice, so on my resume.

@art I have always been of the opinion (and I think this is backed by the E.123 standard, although I've never read it) that parens should be used around parts of the number that might or might not be necessary, depending on where the caller is dialing from.So, #1 was the "correct" format in the NANP prior to 1994, but since then more areas have fallen under 10-digit dialing. 🤮In a 10-digit-dial area (where multiple area codes serve same geography), IMO the correct format is: XXX-XXX-XXXX.
