Is it possible to use a laptop's HDMI output as input?I would like to utilize my laptop's display as primary display of desktop without tearing the laptop apart.I found a way to do that using a display capture device which turns HDMI from desktop to USB, kinda like a webcam. But what I want to do is a bit more urgent than needing another device.#askfedi

@murtezayesil unfortunately no. To my knowledge HDMI is only output.. If you need HD input you may need a separate card for that.

@murtezayesil i'm sure if you check out twitch streamers. They would have more information.

I just thought they would have extra hardware for conversion and stuff. I needed it for a desktop which got its monitor moved to another location and no way of outputing any user interface. Thus no configuration is possible until a device was connected.@nova

@nova @murtezayesil I think it depends on the machine, but AFAIK virtually every laptop has output-only HDMI ports.I think it's *possible* to make a laptop with a bidi HDMI port, but that it's not something that people want enough for it to have been done.Could very well be wrong, this is purely recollection / speculation.

You are probably right. I guess other than some All-In-One devices, there is no laptop computer with laptop hardware and bi-directional HDMI.@pixelherodev @nova

This is the issue, desktop is Windows Home. If it was Windows Pro I would have setup RDP beforehand.@nova

I got a smaller VGA only screen connected to desktop via a VGA-HDMI cable. It gets the job done. I wanted to setup VNC since neither wireless display and RDP are available options. RedHat's TigerVNC server on Windows is not working for me. It cannot handle any screen update for more than few seconds. Moving windows around is impossible.@nova
