@yukiame clearly fake, but in theory shouldn't you be able to reclaim SOME of the energy?

@william_doyle @yukiame You aren't "reclaiming" anything - you are adding extra friction and loss to the system, forcing it to work a little harder to spin that turbine to generate electricity and consuming more gasoline in the process. It's no different from the alternator on the engine, except there is more loss between the engine and the wheel. This is less efficient.

@insurgentem @yukiame that makes sense, but I feel like I've heard of a similar mechanism being used for real in cars. But now that I think of it I think it involved the breaks somehow.

@william_doyle @yukiame You're correct. I don't know if it went into a production vehicle, but I saw a concept article for adding small turbines to wheels so that when braking, a clutch would kick in to capture the deceleration and turn it into electricity. This would not require any extra gasoline to power, and uses the inertia of the car already under motion to generate some electricity during breaking moments. The potential downside to this idea is that you've added some extra weight to the car, which will always draw a little more gasoline, while the electricity generated only kicks in when you're coming to a stop. If you do a lot of stop-and-go driving, the benefit might outweigh the cost of the pushing the small amount of extra weight around. If you mostly do highway driving, then it's less practical. When you consider the extra complexity of the system, it's probably a net negative. If any part of it ever breaks, you're going to have to take it to the dealership, because most average repair shops won't even know what you're talking about. All this concept stuff sounds great until you begin to consider day-to-day real-world application and what the average mouthbreather must deal with in respect to a new technology. There ain't no such thing as a free lunch.
