I want to host a single person fediverse instance. What's the best software to use? These are my requisites:* Compatible with Mastodon's API (I want to use native clients)* Lightweight, the lesser features the better* Usable without web frontend* Software is mature enough I've scrolled through all the options in https://fediverse.party and the closest I could find is GoToSocial but it seems to include tons of features I'll never use.Do you have any other recommendation? Boosts welcome.

Honk is more minimalist and after testing it locally, it does all I want. Unfortunately, it's not compatible with Mastodon's API and I cannot use native clients.

@werwolf At first, I thought about Epycion : https://libreserver.org/epicyon/I also noticed "micropub" while browsing : https://docs.microblog.pub/And by searching "single user activitypub", I found this : https://github.com/toddsundsted/ktistecI didn’t try any, but I am very much enthusiast for Epicyon.I don’t know about other frontends, I think you would need to read the docs or ask maintainers if it’s possible to bind other existing frontends.

@werwolf I thought about hosting my own instance too, but in the end I decided to go with the cheapest plan which https://masto.host/ has to offer. I have closed registration and am the only user of my instance at the moment. It is nice that I can do as I please, but it does get lonely from time to time.

@kuba mastodon is quite heavy and resource intensive. It also has a lot of features which I won't use. Of course that it works flawlessly, but I was looking for an alternative that was lighter on my server resources.

@r3vlibre Epycion is cool, idk how mature it is. I need to find an instance to test it. It lacks compatibility with Mastodon clients but it webUI supports text based browsers, which could be an work around for me.I considered Ktistec. If only it supported Mastodon clients it would be perfect. But it doesn't and the webUI relies on JS so it isn't an option for me.I'll look into Epycion because it's my best bet right now, thanks!

@m2c_n3e I want to host it on my own server and Mastodon is quite heavy on resources compared to other software (even Pleroma is lighter). But if you have enough resources or you're going to pay for dedicated hosting, then Mastodon is a great option.

@werwolf Pleroma seems to meet most of your requirements. That's what I use for my single user instance. It's light on resources, easy to install (Debian), runs in the cheapest Digital Ocean droplet and is rock solid. I use Tusky (Android) plus the Web client.

@andyc I considered Pleroma, and it's one of my current options. I wanted to see if there was something lighter on resources (even if Pleroma is lighter than Mastodon). I know that I'm not going to find any software more mature than Pleroma, it's one of the best established fediverse software.

@r3vlibre @werwolf @gotosocial Umm, I don't know how I get a non-404 direct link to that toot from masto UI, or at all. But it said:> I'm loving the #GoToSocial experience! It doesn't break, I rarely feel its presence and upgrades are stupid easy.

Don't get me wrong, I love Fosstodon, which has been my home in the Fediverse since I joined back in 2020. I will continue using this account, because of the local timeline and as a secondary/backup.I just want to host my own infrastructure, that's all. Decentralization is the key feature for the fediberse and single user instances are the way to go for people that have the skills.

@werwolf I'd say Pleroma is your best bet. Lightweight, works with Mastodon clients, and is pretty stable in my experience (your mileage may vary.)It does have some extra features but you can use MRFs to effectively disable many of them.

@werwolf Already had a look at #Dolphin?“Dolphin is a fork of Misskey and a sister project of it. While inheriting attractive features such as reaction and high performance, it has been optimized for single-user use. As a result, it is easier to use and lighter.”https://github.com/syuilo/dolphin

@werwolf perhaps epicyon.net? I haven't used it, but I noticed that it's available via YUNOHost. It's super lightweight and can even be accessed from a shell browsr. No JavaScript either. I'm not sure about compatibility with the mastodon api. It seems pretty stable due to it's simplicity

@werwolf @r3vlibre I run a tor instance of epicyon and I think it would work better from the clear net. One advantage to running epicyon is that the owner @bob runs and uses epicyon actively. Also its light and works across almost every browser.

@werwolf I run a self-hosted Pleroma instance with Raspberry Pi 4 from my home.it has been very stable.Mastodon front-end is there too but I find it messy and I don’t like black.the instance has 2 main users, it has been running one year.I think everybody should run their own instances. You can install Pleroma with https://yunohost.org/en/apps?q=%2Fapps

@Doudouosm Misskey is written in TypeScript which is kinda slow (even if optimized for single user instances). And the webUI is heavy. It's not for me, thanks. Although it's interesting to see software focused on single user instances.

@werwolf @tfb @xarvos @humanetech What is the purpose of this fork ? I didn’t find it clearly on the home page, except for "a smallish microblogging platform, aka the cooler pleroma". Which is a bit "cryptic" to me (I don’t know if the word "cryptic" has a meaning and if that’s the one I am thinking about).

@xarvos @werwolf @humanetech @r3vlibreBetter translation, local-only posting, a "local bubble" timeline of nearby instances, bug fixes, federation fixes, better control of isolating hostile instances, ...As for yeeting the "free speech" types, it's a fork by some of the Free Software oriented developers who want nothing to do with the toxic, harassing, dysfunctional Pleroma core dev group.
