@stux that gas would have been burned anyway so... it's better if they burn it than they leak it into the atmosphere, that would be worse. methane has a 4x greenhouse effect compared to CO2 if i'm not mistaken.

@stux If russians are a threat to climate change quest (other than peace and human rights as a whole), then they are a threat to the world. I wonder why western public opinion is not considering the idea of neutralizing this threat

@stux Direct your hate towards Putin's willing supporters (including some of the tankies I see on Mastodon). The place is a de facto dictatorship and everyone else is dragged along for the ride under fear of arrest, death, or the arrest/death of their families

@stux Unfortunately, one can't just stop extracting #naturalgas and it also can't be stored easily. You either have to transport it away via #pipeline (or liquify it if you have the machinery), pump it directly into the atmosphere - or burn it. #Russia can't sell most of it's #gas anymore, doesn't have the machinery to liquify it and pumping it directly into the air is even more devastating than burning it.In other words: Burning the gas is an effect of the sanctions vs Russia.
