@sjw the FDA always had standards for insect parts, rat turds, listeria, radioactive waste, etc. in food products. i think they just lowered the standards for insects.

@WaughheadRex @sjw it's mostly chitin. think of eating mudbugs, leaving the shell on. worse than eating beef with skin and hair on it. just grinding it up does not make it any more nutritious.

@not_br549 @sjw chitin is mostly glucose. there are already bug residues in most foods. Honey is a wonderful example of why this isn't a problem.

@WaughheadRex @sjw chitin is not honey. it is more like wood, which is also a glucose polymer. you know, hair and hooves and beaks are keratin, which is a protein. just not a protein you would want to eat.

@not_br549 @sjw chitin is also in mushrooms, I eat those too. It's in clam and coral shell calcium that some use. I buy collagen and consume it by the kilo, it's not that different. I filter my water through bone char. I'm not squeamish, if it works I use it.

@WaughheadRex @sjw Not sure what sort of mushrooms you eat, but chitin is mostly found in animals. It is tough and resilient. The shells of insects and other arthropods are made of chitin. It is not protein, it is a polysaccharide with some amino groups on it. It resembles cellulose, but cellulose lacks the amino groups. The fiber in mushrooms is cellulose, usually. Both of these polysaccharides are linked in a manner that resists digestive enzymes. In other words, cellulose and chitin just go through your gut and emerge unchanged. Maybe good for roughage. Starch is also a polysaccharide, but it is a digestible polymer form. It's like slow-dissolving sugar. Collagen is a protein. Not a complete protein, but protein nonetheless. It is made of linked amino acids -- glycine, proline, hydroxyproline. Completely digestible. Clam shells are mostly aragonite, and corals are made of various calcium compounds. They are composite materials, stuck together with a protein matrix. But mostly calcium carbonate.

@sjw @WaughheadRex like I was saying, think of eating crawdads, but leaving the shells on them. (except the meat/shell ratio is lower for insects)

@not_br549 @sjw did a lot of testing on digestibility; crickets are being rolled out in cat food right now. The cats do better on it than pea protein, which is the default in most brands. Cats do eat insects in the wild.

@sjw Aaand of course, they won't stop. The same sort of people thought it a good idea to put corn-derived ethanol in the gasoline for your car. Well, now they have this new stupid idea. Even after it is obvious that it is a waste of corn, energy, water, and farmland to put ethanol in the gasoline, they still do it. And, now they have this. Even though it creates more pollution and costs more, either to raise lab-cultured meat or bugs, than to just let cattle wander around eating grass. Even though people don't want to eat disgusting bugs. Even though the nutritional value of ground-up bugs is poor. And, even though bugs can carry new unfamiliar parasites and diseases. They will make you eat the bugs.

@Apollonian_Differential @sjw MTBE is a far less corrosive, and much more effective, anti-knock additive. "but it's toxic", you say -- well, you can't drink the ethanol either, once they put it in gasoline.

@Apollonian_Differential @sjw Also worth mentioning: I'm pretty sure it is still cheaper to make ethanol from mineral hydrocarbons than by fermenting plant starch. If you must have ethanol in your fuel, why not make it directly from natural gas, and skip all the plowing and harvesting and zymurgy, etc.?

@not_br549 @sjw Probably, although this may not always be the case, such as places without much natural gas but plenty of good farmland. Doesn't make sense in America though.

@not_br549 @sjw. chickens are the ultimate omnivore, I don't think we'll ever beat them for efficient protein, especially from eggs. feeding them crickets is too expensive; a pound of chicken is $6-8. you free range them and they eat wild bugs. some use the birds as pest control in biodynamic farming; puts nitrogen into the soil. You just gotta watch them, they have a lot of predators.

@WaughheadRex @sjw > feeding them crickets is too expensive; And that's what makes this globohomo plan so stupid. Raising bugs, earthworms, etc. exclusively for protein/food is far more expensive and environmentally destructive than more traditional farmed food. Of course, the current state of the farm is unsustainable as well. Dependent on chemicals, industrial field machinery, feedlots, mutant chickens ... we are witnessing how easily it can be sabotaged...

@not_br549 @WaughheadRex @sjw It could be due to the process of raising bugs being sensitive to scale economies allowing them to consolidate all meat production in a few plants. It also serves as psychological pressure to not eat meat altogether and just consume whatever goyslop they make.

@WaughheadRex @sjw .... one item comes to mind as I review this thread. @Waughhead_Rex , you mentioned mushrooms. Fungi are weird things, capable of doing all sorts of biochemistry in a small space. Don't tell globohomo about it, but mushrooms are probably as close as you can get to that farm-in-a-shoebox. Feed 'em shit, keep 'em in the dark. The globohomo management mantra.
