I've chosen not to accept my $10k in #StudentLoanForgiveness.That's not my money, that's your money. That's money the government taxed from you. It shouldn't be used for my benefit. @gritsEducation DOESN'T cost thousands of dollars. Everything I learned at college could have been learned for free, even at the time. I chose to go into debt to pay for it. That was my stupid decision and it's my responsibility to fix it.I appreciate the gesture, but when the government takes money forcibly from those who earn it to pay for other peoples' mistakes, civilization has failed. I want future generations to have what I didn't: A world free from coersion.

@swashberry If you don’t want it, take it and invest it into something you think is important, such as a charity or organisation you believe is doing good work.Might as well make the most of 10k if you have the chance

@danielIt's not my money to spend. That money was taken from other people by force on the pretense that it would be used to their benefit. I need nothing desperately enough to take it by force from others who have earned it.I would much rather the money be given voluntarily to an organization for people who truly need it; then I might be able to accept it. As it stands, it's blood money, and I can't accept that; not with an easy conscience.

@swashberry no, i agree, education doesn't actually cost what the sticker price says. and debt forgiveness is not a long term solution to that problem. but covid did hit a lot of people hard and i don't oppose my tax money going towards making this whole situation a little less awful for students who are exploited by the system.you're welcome to stand by your conviction, but... really, no one will fault you. it's been hard for everyone. you're not stupid for wanting an education.

@gritsThank you. I can feel the genuine compassion in what you've written. Believe me when I say that under any other circumstances I would seriously consider accepting relief. I just wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing that it wasn't given voluntarily. I'm already ashamed for accepting the COVID relief I got from the Trump administration.Don't worry about me. I'll be fine. We've all got something worth fighting for.
