If you're starting a brand new account on a Fediverse server, it's not a good idea to post lots of content before you have followers. The only people who can see your posts on the Fediverse are those on your server, those on other servers which have at least one person following you, or those who see your post shared. If you post all your best content up front on a brand new account with no followers, no one outside your server will be able to see it. Even if they follow you later, the posts you made before that will not be visible to them, because Fedi platforms don't backfill old posts on accounts you follow. It's much better to gradually add content as your follower numbers grow. You only need one follower from a server in order for everyone on that server to see your post. Even if you only have a dozen followers, that's up to 12 other servers that can see what you post.#Fediverse #Followers (Sorry for repost, I phrased original post really badly!)

@feditips This sounds counterintuitive and backwards. You need content to attract followers but anything you post before someone follows you can't be seen?So you have to have a following on another platform to make Fediverse useful? Not gonna lie but the more I learn about the fediverse projects, the more broken it feels. There are so many small things like this that stop the general population from even considering them.

@LibreLife It's not broken, it's a "least worst" compromise that allows anyone to start their own server. If you have all posts visible everywhere on every server, each server would rapidly fill with irrelevant posts taking up massive amounts of resources. Independent servers would be impossible. There would only be massive corporations running Fedi servers, because only they would have the resources to do so.By making servers only notice what they absolutely have to notice, it makes it possible for small independent servers to operate within a reasonable budget. You don't need LOADS of followers to get widely seen, you only need one follower on a server for all of the people on that server to see your posts. All I'm saying is, don't post loads of stuff when you have literally zero followers. Wait until you have even a handful of followers, and your posts will reach a much wider audience.

@LibreLife The alternative to this is using centralised services, and they inevitably get bought out by nasty people whenever they get popular. So, (IMHO) having to have a few followers before you post your best content is a reasonable price to pay for keeping the network out of the hands of nasty megacorporations.

@feditips @LibreLife I think that the approach of posting things to attract subscribers is not the only valid one. In my opinion, fediverse is more of discobering conversations, participating of those interactions and grow from that.

@marcelcosta @feditips I never said it was the only way, but it is the way the general public uses social media and how we've been trained to treat it.

@LibreLife @feditips True! And I agree with that, people is trained to do that. But I think, this is the problem (or part of it) of mainstream social networks. They are more about exposition and ego than natural connections. So I wouldn’t say Fediverse is broken for not promoting it. It’s not a bug, it’s a feature! 😜

@marcelcosta @LibreLife By the way, I agree the lack of backfilling is confusing and broken, and it really should be fixed. Fedi servers should backfill least a few recent posts when you follow someone. If people want to let the Mastodon devs know that backfilling should happen, please give a thumbs up to this issue:https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/34

@feditips @LibreLife Yeah, a few posts seems a good idea to me, although I use pleroma. However, you can easily go to the external server and see the full profile. I do this many times and is a click.

@feditips thank you, so could it be default behavior to change server(with a warning) when checking someone's profile ?

@bertr4n Umm... if you want to see the most complete and up to date version of someone's profile, click on their profile avatar to view their profile on their home server.
