Hey all. One of my eyes has had loss of vision, like a permanent black floater, near the bottom of my vision. Any idea what's up with that? It's been going on for a week now. No visible issues with said eye. Here's a cool dog eye thing for your trouble - iris cyst

@Tepid_Tapir Well, your retina could be detaching. Thatโ€™s an emergency, go to an eye doctor immediately.

@Tepid_Tapir For more unlucky diagnoses:-Photopsia, if it "shines" but unlikely if it's a proper black spot-Your eye decided to have the world's tiniest stroke and block some visionhealio.com/news/optometry/20161207/patient-complains-of-large-dark-spot-in-vision-of-right-eyeNot a doctor, shouldn't be poking your eyes or anything, go see an eye doc if worsens etc. etc. etc.

@Tepid_Tapir How much of your vision does it take up & do you ever see strange lights in that eye ? Might be nothing or might be a retinal tear (in which case treat it immediately). This might be one of those 'go to the Dr. tomorrow' things and not an 'ask strangers online' kind of things.

@Tepid_Tapir It's impossible to say without proper examination. There are many possible causes. You should go see an ophthalmologist.

It takes up so little of my vision that it took me some time to realize wtf is wrong. I just knew things looked different. It's way at the bottom of my vision.I get those 'stars' people talk about but only once in a blue moon and usually after heavy exercise and not taking care of myself.I was hoping someone would be like 'oh yeah I get those once in a while it goes away' type of deals

@Tepid_Tapir usually goes away on its own. When you described 'loss of vision' I thought you were losing peripheral vision to the spots, like a big chunk of your eyesight was going. Should still check on it but thats far less worrying.

@Tepid_Tapir If it's a speck that's floating, and it moves around when you look at other stuff, it might just be a bit of protein gone bad. They're harmless but don't go away for a long time.If it's a region or percentage of your vision, that stays roughly the same area no matter where you look, see a doctor immediately. No long distance guess on what that might be, but most possibilities will need to be looked at.

@Tepid_Tapir Ok, so bearing in mind I'm not a physician, this is actually a common misconception. A migraine is not itself a headache, but rather a severe headache is one of the symptoms of migraines. It sounds like what you probably were (and may be now) suffering from is what's called an ocular migraine. My personal suggestion would be to try otc treatment for migraine (since the mechanism is the same even though the symptoms are different.) If it doesn't clear up with the otc meds, I'd suggest seeing a doctor. Either way, I hope you feel better soon man.

@Tepid_Tapir Floaters happen, they are usually normal, I hear if there are suddenly many that's real bad though. You should take time off, chill, decaffeinated, and get your eye pressure checked.โ€‹
