Just published a paper on decision-making in frontiers. Brief overview:-people played matching pennies (2-choice rock paper scissors) against a computer-choices were selected using a touchscreen, would move locations between trials-people valued choices according to location, not identity.-they avoided the location of a previous loss, rather than avoiding the choice itself that led to the loss-cannabis use is associated with worse, more habitual decision-making in females-cannabis use doesn’t affect decision-making in males so much

Yeah, it's a pretty universal finding. Put rats in a maze and give them cannabis, and spatial navigation in the females suffers much more. I've also noticed differences in brain scans and IQ tests. Estrogen influences the endocannabinoid system in the brain if I recall. Give male rats estrogen, and they'll be similarly affected by cannabis or other drugs.

Men exhibit much higher rates of drug use across the board. But women who are addicts tend to be more heavily affected, more negative outcomes, higher relapse rates, even if you account for weight differences.

Yeah, and most psychological disorders (depression, anxiety, etc.) are a consequence of habitual cannabis use, rather than depressed people having a higher tendency to use cannabis later. ADHD is the main exception I found. Seen a few papers on people with ADHD using cannabis to self-medicate.

The causality doesn't come from me, it comes from twin studies as well as studies regarding adolescents who used/didn't use cannabis or who exhibited/didn't exhibit symptoms of depression. In the latter example, using cannabis in adolescence was a good predictor of depression later in life, but the same wasn't true of depression. I'll try to find my citations, as well as those for the twin studies.

Well, at any rate I don't care for the drug trade, and its negative effects were part of the reason for my wanting to study cannabis use and the brain. Though that was just a small part of my thesis.

Yeah, there's a bunch of papers on socioeconomic status, which is confounded with drug abuse. But again twin studies would control for socioeconomic & genetic factors. I found two citations:Lynskey et al. 2004. Major depressive disorder, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempt in twins discordant for cannabis dependence and early-onset cannabis use.Smolkina et al. 2017. Yeah, I did cannabis since it was the easiest to study on humans, since you get such a large subject pool. An old lab I worked in did a lot of studies with amphetamines, but that was mainly in rats.

@parker tx, i may check these later. keep in mind even identical twins won't end up with identical brain development, neurochemistry or life experiences, regardless of weed use. individual events in early childhood can have a profound effect on development. so yea it's a reasonable model in theory but i'm still skeptical.

Weed yes, edibles mostly. Hooked myself up to an EEG in a dark, soundproof room with a computer flashing stimuli at me to see what would happen with my brain activity. Took way too much though, had a panic attack, and puked. Had to stop the experiment early.

Edibles are really hard to modulate. Empty stomach vs just had lunch, oh wow I guess this one brownie got all the green butter, etc. Smoking allows for much finer control because the feedback is near instantaneous, you have enough you put the smoke down. Vs "you ate it, puke or hold on, and btw not sure about that first option"

Thanks. Man, just before I quit I was going overboard, making home-made thc extracts that were waaaaay to potent for me.Plus I might have fucked up my lungs by not getting out all the solvents. I still have the my old vacuum chamber lol. And even though I won't use the last bit of extract I made, I can't throw it out because I worked so hard on it!After I quit smoking (and drinking), I got more and more productive in my life.
