viii is fantastic and a great way to get into the series. there are two ways of playing: the (western) ps2 version. make sure that you don't play the jap version as the soundtrack is synthesised music whereas the western release is purely orchestral. There's also the 3ds version which adds new content but lacks the orchestral ost. there's a mod to get to ps2 ost back but you'll have to play it either emulated or on a 3ds with custom firmware. Great game.

ff8 gives you a level of agency as to how you play it. the first time I played it, I abused nothing and tried to level normally. It's not a horrible hard game, but you can very easily make it annoying. oh, and the ost is fantastic.

I loved IX, it was a good return to the series roots, and if you get it on steam Moguri mod makes it look nice. The only major flaw with the game was not including Beatrix as a permanent party member.

GFs are weak as fuck. Autoattacking with the best magic you can get in slot is the best tactic.Don't get me started on the story.

@CasperDoogan Early Final Fantasy is a bit dated if you're a Zoomer. The really popular ones start with Final Fantasy VI - X. Also, the numbering got messy in the early days because they skipped over Final Fantasy II and III for export and the numbers in North America didn't match the Japanese ones for a while.
