@Luther It is due to the loss of traditional religion. Humans are religious beings, and the soul requires a connection to the divine, the eternal, which provides the means to grapple with and overcome our mortality in the face of the infinite. Without this we are suspended above the void without knowledge of it, or a way to engage it, and are afflicted with the horror and despair of annihilation, but with no way to overcome it. And so we go mad.

They are collective hive-minded group thinkers with eyes wide open darting around in the corners to see where the herd moves. Imagine having that kind of control over people.
