Casual observation at the supermarket:People with families have photos of their kids, as the background on their mobile 'phones. People with partners have photos of their loved ones. People without either of those have photos of their dogs or cats.I use a photo of #Gruoch on my mobile.

@fitheach It's not a boss thing, it's just we usually do the shopping together and each remembers about half of the shopping list.Wallets are a place for keeping little colourful bits of paper you can exchange for food when the plastic cards aren't working or accepted, which in our cause is often. And coins for paying the farmer's Ape (a three wheeled mini-truck by Piaggio) that sells the freshest stuff. He laughs at plastic cards and doesn't like notes. And photo of partner.

I was able to make the observation because so many people are waving their 'phones about when making payments at the checkout.More people use their 'phones to make payments than use credit/debit cards. Presumably, most people will be using Google or Apple Pay. I don't understand the advantage of using those services.

@fitheach@mstdn.io From user perspective? One less thing to carry (just phone) and added security with randomly generated card number. From Apple/Google the obvious one - filling in the hole in data collection. Not only they no when and where you went, but also how much you spent there

@fitheach @potato_lisper Well, it is slightly more secure than just using your credit card. But only slightly. NFC consumes very little battery, so it can be used even if your phone is almost out of juice. And NFC has its own set of security issues...I have used it in NYC to pay for subway fares, simply because it is a hundred times better than using the MTA vending machines. But I always activate/deactivate NFC every time I go through the turnstile.

@penguin42 @fitheach @potato_lisper Apple pay and Google pay generate a temporary token and transmit it through NFC to the point of sale.No ID information is transmitted, including the credit card number, except for the ID of the bank The token is sent to the card issuer, matched to the valid card number and the transaction is approved or declined. At least, that's the way it was explained to me when I worked in that field about a year ago.

@fitheach I use one of @benoitmandelbot 's images. Because GrapheneOS's default background is solid black and that's kind of bleak. But up until then, it was whatever default came with the phone because a) it was usually pretty nice and b) I kind of resent smartphones for displacing real computers.

@fitheach That's the deep magic. From what I understood, but I am probably wrong, the token is generated with a one-way hash, which uses as input the (UTC) date & time of day, the ID of the phone (which they get when you register the phone) + the card number itself. A little bit like Google Authenticator, the token is generated every x minutes, on both the phone and the bank's system. If a token match, then the card number and the card owner information are pulled out.

@fitheach Yes, the merchant info and transaction amounts are transmitted, but they are added to the token generated by the phone by the point of sale. And, yes, the phone apps and phone makers get a lot of info, especially if combined with geolocalisation.
