@jk we had them in amongst our box of christmas decorations, they were very old and dusty, and my mom forbade that we put them up precisely for that reason. and yet we never seemed to be able to get rid of them

@jk you know what they remind me of very specifically. they're like... your nan's 70th birthday do, in the function room of the royal british legion, or maybe the conservative club, in 1998 or so. they remind me of being in a room full of old people i dont know telling me they remember me when i was this small and how big ive grown. thats the exact vibe they give off

@envgen i was watching one of the adam curtis documentaries a few weeks ago and i noticed there was one archive clip that was some kind of group therapy session filmed in the 1970s, in an extremely what-was-tasteful-and-modern-in-the-60/70s type of living room. full length pale gold/peach curtains, very light pink walls, two very normal standard lamps, floral sofa and two chairs, etc. the spitting image of exactly what my grandparents' living room looks like to this day

@envgen in the aforementioned living room, there's a bookcase with some knicknacks and framed photographs of family etc. a couple of the group family photographs were taken in the room itself, and everything looks identical, despite the pictures featuring people who might even have died nearly 50 years ago

@envgen the thing that's striking about it actually is like. with the exception of it being quite old-people-core, it is reasonably modern-feeling somehow. they keep an extremely clean and tidy house and do DIY and so on. only the colour of the curtains and the patterned sofas really date it. i think my grandma was quite trendy back in the day, quite glamorous in that 60s kinda way. she seemed to be going for a kind of jackie kennedy thing

@envgen next time i'm there i really should ask her about Food Trends of the 60s because i bet she's done some very fad-oriented spreads

@hazel @envgen apparently my great aunt committed a Fried Banana Faux Pas in 1958 by frying the banana ‘too long’ which produced an ‘awful smell’ and everybody had to ‘leave’ and go ‘down the pub’
