What do you think the letter "p" stands for in 720p, 1080p, etc.?Boosts are appreciated.

@nicemicro I picked the common misconception answer, because that's always how I've read it in my head, but your question itself did actually make me immediately realize it was wrong!

@nicemicro how is "pixel" getting more votes than... the correct answer?! guess I'm old... I mean, I can remember the time before HD television way back 15 years ago

@paul well bet you that if people were not allowed to reply here (or at least the first few comments weren't musings about what the incorrect answer is), the ratio wouldn't be this close to 50-50, and the "wrong" answer would win by a significant margin.

nicemicro@fosstodon.org It’s the height of the resolution, but p means it’s in progressive scan. i means it’s interlaced (1080i, 480i, etc.). It dates back to the days of CRT televisions (not the race teachings)

@megmac I am actually pleasantly surprised that only 50% of people got the wrong answer. Based on my previous discussions with people, I expected more than 2/3 of the answers to be wrong.

@sotolf @theDoctor @paul Ohh yeah, TVs were cool but have you ever tuned in a radio with a dial and switched between FM, LW, MW and SW?Well when I was a kid, of course FM was the way, but our radio had it all.

@nicemicro @theDoctor @paul Sure, there almost never was anything on MW in Norway, but I loved listening to the radio, so much so that I still remember the frequencies of the channels that I liked listening to the most :p ;)

@nicemicro @sotolf @theDoctor I have indeed!I've even tuned in a TV via a physical (not digital) dial as well! No remote control, just a dial and 8 button on the front to switch channels. Beautiful. Now, have you ever had to pre-wind a cassette tape to the precise location required to be able to load a basic text editor on a computer? 🤣

@paul @nicemicro @theDoctor Also the good old days when we used RF-Modulators to connect our consoles with the TV, no scart or RCI or anything fancy, just the consoles basically emulating a TV sender :)

@sotolf @paul @theDoctor well, our family was not wealthy enough to have a console, but I inherited a Commodore PLUS4 from my uncle with a cassette drive, so loading up a game was:1. rewind tape to the beginning2. zero the counter on the tape3. forward the tape to the number noted on the handwritten note my uncle jotted down4. start the loading process and pray it works

@nicemicro IIRC it's progressive? IIRC it's legacy from when there was e.g. 720p vs 720i, where 720i was interlaced and 720p wasn't?Not sure.
