@Cleisthenes isn't this decreasing light though, thus decreasing yield?

Let us know if it works well. I'm very interested as I have never seen this growing method before.

@HockeyDoxie @Cleisthenes Will do. I try to post anything related to the garden under #gardening I had a conversation with a couple of dudes on here that said it collapes in the center. I think it's something you'd have to build up at the end of every season.

I was thinking that a chicken wire or mesh frame would keep the mound in place.

@Cleisthenes You can make a crate for potatoes as well and have multiple layers. I am not sure if this impacts their quality (vitamin content, starchiness, volume), but probably extremely space efficient

@Cleisthenes The issue when planting isn't surface area, it's the space the roots have to grow in. And this system isn't really helping. Roots are likely to get crowded and overlap, which harms the plants. Also, this makes for very inefficient watering, since water would mostly just slide over the surface, and not go deep in the mound.

@HockeyDoxie @Cleisthenes I was thinking if it collapsed I would just flatten it out and make pollinators beds. I made one this year and it has been wonderful to watch. We've had dozens of butterflies, bees and hummingbirds in this one area all summer.

@Cleisthenes Not the first time that I see growing directly in straw this but it's not as effective as direct soil, yes you get water but the evaporation is still greater due to the lack of soil and the plant don't get all the minerals needed.Better to use the straw as mulch directly on the soil to act as a shield.
