I have a question:I'm using the #microG flavor of #lineageOS on my phone. Also I'm currently learning a language with #Duolingo installed via #AuroraStore. The app itself does not request any location permissions.I'm using a free tier of the app, so unfortunately there are some adds every now and then during use. Those adds are scarily accurate in terms of my location (adds from stores in my city, or of other cities if I'm on the road). How do they do that?

Do they resolve the location server-side and then serve fitting ads?(Also s/add/ad/g)

@vanitasvitae Yes, likely just using your IP address.

@raucao sounds like a flaw in the permission system :/

@vanitasvitae @raucao How so? They have some online service that you probably agreed to use according to their terms. They can log your ip easily then.

@mrwsl @raucao sure, but I would expect an app to which I refused location permissions not to know where I am :D

@vanitasvitae is the app allowed to get a list of wifi networks near you?

@vanitasvitae How so? You cannot connect to anything without an IP address. If you use your local ISP's address for the connection, then no permission can prevent resolving its rough location (usually city level).

@wolf480pl I guess Android would classify that as access to location as well.

@raucao I know how the Internet Protocol works :D I'm just surprised by the fact that the permission system fails in this case.

@vanitasvitae Fails at what exactly? What is it supposed to do in order to "succeed" in your opinion?

@vanitasvitae Your IP adress often gives enough information to know your location.https://www.whatismyip.com/

@vanitasvitae I think they can get a rough location via the IP address :/ Have you tried with a VPN?
