I saw people talking earlier this week about how the (current) Fortran website was funny because it lets them look modern by claiming like 69% of features of Rust or somethingbut I don't think this needs to be a toxic competition, and I think the newer website (to be pushed this week) actually is exciting because of how professional and thoughtful it is? https://fortran-lang.github.io/webpage/

people say "don't judge a book by its cover" yet I absolutely value code stuff by their websites because they pretty unanimously reflect the competence, care and culture from those making the stuffand when it'a goodgood I :blobcatmelt: 💗

@xerz Obviously, I can't speak for others; but, for me, it is funny because of the juxtaposition of perceptions of cultures. The reason it's not expected is because we just never hear of progress in the Fortran community. I think most people just expect Fortran code to be stuck in the 60s, and on mainframes and supercomputers.Personally, while I did get a chuckle, I am quite happy that it's there. I remember when Common Lisp redid their web presence and adopted a new package manager (ASDF, if I recall correctly), etc. I was mostly ignorant of Common Lisp before that happened. So, I did find it amusing; but I also don't feel any competition over it. I welcome it, and encourage other languages to do the same. (E.g., http://forth-standard.org is an example of this, too.)

@xerz I made the post (https://tilde.zone/@nytpu/108867422941041239) mostly tongue in cheek, not meant to be any form of serious competition. I was just pleasantly surprised about the Fortran site and added the snide comment about rust at the end

@xerz still trying to fix the 60 years we wasted by deciding to use C everywhere instead of any good language that already existed back then, I see?

@pulkomandy worth pointing out that Fortran90 added memory management features which easily make it unsafe, and previous versions might still be without limiting yourself with a subseteven then Fortran still has things C just doesn't lol

@xerz oh I thought the fun part was more along the lines of "Damn we really are just perpetually reinventing the wheel"

@fsan nah we're not (e.g. in no way does Rust's static analysis compare to much else, and in fact internally it's much closer to Prolog or Haskell than Fortran), but sticking to a single way to do things (imperative-first text programming languages) does lead to some repetition :blobcatthink:

@xerz I guess this is going to be neat to what I could jokingly describe as "The forgotten competitor of C (except in Math fields)".
